Ugh, I remember how hard it was to see/find things. I really didn't like the fact that you needed the arrows to see things sometimes. I tended not to use them even when I was really stuck. And yet I still enjoyed the game at least and I would suggest you do what Vex suggested and stay on it at least until you start getting more freedoms (and different colour chocobos). By then you'll hopefully get used to the looks of things and the game gets much more interesting as well.
