George R. R. Martin (author of the
A Song of Ice and Fire series) thinks fanfiction is the product of 'lazy writers' using other peoples' characters and copyright infringement.
I think he's a pejorative term for donkey. But that whole series was an epic disappointment to me, especially after all my online friends basically told me it was like LOTR with sexual intrigue, I found it to be really stupidly depressing (everyone I like dies) and filled with bastards (everyone I hated lived). So I've never bothered with it's fanfiction. However an author saying crap like this pisses me off, because it assumes fans are unimaginative morons, that are easily entertained.
Have you heard of
"Fifty Shades of Grey" by E.L. James? Well that started out as a Twilight fanfic *shudders* and horror of horrors it spawned an actual novel. With lots of erotica and BDSM that isn't unexpected in fanworks. I've never read it and I don't plan to, but I applaud the author, I've read some fantastic stuff in the Potter and Supernatural community that I would gladly pay for, so it always makes me happy when a good author gets published.
G.R.R. Martin should stop trolling his fans and start collection Hetalia doujin, it's good for the soul.
