Personality: Shinji is a relatively laid-back but highly intelligent individual. He is bold, calm, somewhat arrogant and very cunning. He isn't a bad person but is willing to do bad things if necessary. More than anything he just wants to be entertained.
Background: Shinji was abandoned as a baby, he has no knowledge of who his parents are. He grew up in the foster system, spending time with various families until they inevitably sent him back due to misbehaviour. As soon as he turned sixteen he left the care home, he used his intelligence and cunning nature to make money from gambling to support himself. By doing so he gained great skill in reading people, manipulation and deception. After a few years he had earned a fair amount of money but had lost interest in generic gambling, he started gambling for different things, one of which was a very rare Shiny Charmander. After spending time with the Pokemon he wanted a new challenge, his desire led him into become a Pokémon Trainer.
