I know you said you don't like mechas, but I still recommend Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
If there's anything with mechas in it that is further away from your usual mecha series then it's that. Mechas just happen to be there, they might as well be enchanted armors, the show would still be awesome.

So it's kind of not a mecha series though it does have mechas. Hard to explain. It's nothing like Full metal panic or gundam or other mecha series.
