for Desktop yea that's something else, I've never bought a SSD for a desktop as still waiting for prices to go down and especially I'm happy with my WD RE3 1TB for now and no need to spend more just for more performance
but for laptop upon my experience with most people if you don't break your laptop HD your friend would do it for you
#1 problem causing HD death on laptops not waiting for system to fully shutdown or hibernate before putting in the bag. Most good laptops have software to protect HDs from shocks (to a certain extent) while operating but during shutdown process the computer is vulnerable and HD can be damaged from shock
Also seen stupid crap like having a name tag magnet next to laptop and kaboom that HD is gone
64GB is pretty good for a laptop and recommend that SSD for most laptop users and no there is no need to carry an external HD around and don't need to carry all your stuff with you all the time, also a 2.5" external is very light and only require an extra USB port (sometimes not) to operate
