They can, we've seen Naruto use them together for a short moment. Sure he can't fuse with the toads, but sage chakra he's gathered himself works fine.

Rough sketches? There's official artwork, colored and all, just check the naruto wikia if you haven't seen them.

I agree that that arc was terrible, but why wouldn't these things have whack powers? I mean they're essentially masses of power with sentience.

Not meaning to bash you or anything, but have you been keeping up? The first part is proven false, it came from the Juubi.
Secondly, the Jinchuuriki is the host, the demon is still a Bijuu.
And well, I guess an extracted beast is back in its original form, ready to be re-inserted into the Juubi. Good reasoning on that one.
