Even though we don't know the exact time setting that the pictures are in, I think that Rikudo became a jinchuuriki, THEN he had two pupils because he was on his death bed and wanted to pass down the knowledge of a shinobi.

And when madara is explaining what happened between the juubi and Rikudo, you don't see Rikudo's eyes until after he created the jutsu that made him it's jinchuuriki.
