1. He didn't have an inner hollow when he stabbed Rukia. We saw the birth of his hollow in Kisukes hole.
2. He was mere peon when he first started off, unable to even fase Byakuya Kuchiki, in his fight with Renji.

He was interested because of his growth rate, it was unlike any other. Plus the fact that he was only human, which made him that much more interested.
