My thoughts as for the hole Urahara tossed Ichigo down into was to give him something to strive for instead of just sitting around watching his chain get eaten away. By telling him that he needed to make it out to become a shinigami he mentally prepared himself (prolly without realizing it) to resist turning into a hollow and as you said make a temporary fix to subdue his inner hollow.
