from what i saw in the anime, isshin is strong as DUCK ! and kills the grandfisher in one simple swing.
isshin even said "all captain ranked shinigami's control the size of their zanpktou. otherwise they would be swinging around a skyscraper-like sword."
so im guessing he was a captain.

but what i dont understand is. why didnt Kon or the Trio's tell ichigo that his dad is a shinigami. or why isshin never appeared again as a shinigami. WHACKK !!!
so sad.

Urahara said that he gave up his Shinigami powers 20 years ago, which wouldn't fit if he stepped back as a captain 100 years ago. Also, it is implied that he doesn't know the true origin of the Vizards and that he only has heard of them, and furthermore, Shinji didn't recognize his reiatsu, which he should have if he was a captain in his time.
It could be that he had been the captain of 10th Squad before Toshiro Hitsugaya, as it would fit the fact that he, as mentioned before, lost his Shinigami powers 20 years ago, and that Hitsugaya became a captain not long after that.

It's his own body, no reason why he shouldn't be able to use it. Preventing a body from decaying shouldn't be hard, and once he's a shinigami I'd guess his body changes slightly to accomodate that(still goes "dead" when he leaves it though)

Of course it is a gigai or else not many people would see him and could their mom see shinigami because I read somewhere that she was half shinigami and half human

There's a few things hinting apon this such as the charm, but that's really a stretch.
Considering Isshin could of realized Ichigo wouldn't just wear a charm if he gave him one. But saying it was once his mothers, in turn made him wear it, thus preventing Kon form spirit based attacks. Or it really could just be his mothers, and that would mean shes knowledgeable of shinigami and hollows thus having somekind of powers.
