Its a known fact that Captains who are strong enough, are promoted to Royal guard.
Obviously their captains robes go with them, or maybe not. Anyways, Isshin has no insignia on his robe. Maybe they remove the insignia, obviously because they aren't part of the gotei 13 anymore. But they keep their robes on them aswell.

i think the current espada jus came and took the place of the old ones, the old ones probably werent as strong as teh new arrancar (similar to wht balling like a fool said), and some vasto lorde did exist but with the hogyouku (purple ball) aizen can speed up the process to turn adjuchas (or w/e) into vasto lorde way faster....

"that guy ichigo beat" was a privaron espada, ex-espada, he was still created by Aizen, he just got kicked out as soon as Aizen made a better arrancar.

Oh and that privaron espada, was way too old for the hoguoku to of been used on him. Some vital information is missing, but it always comes back to the two factors.
Either Aizen had another method of making arrancar, or they already existed.

It was "Tragic demise" too. Something killed them, they were labeled Espada, he said so himself the "last remaining espada." They obviously survived the transformation, to be labeled espada.

i believe that there was espada before aizen but none of them were as strong as the ones that ar here now and as of which they were probaly killed by the espada most likely ulquiorrra
