Its a known fact that Captains who are strong enough, are promoted to Royal guard.
Obviously their captains robes go with them, or maybe not. Anyways, Isshin has no insignia on his robe. Maybe they remove the insignia, obviously because they aren't part of the gotei 13 anymore. But they keep their robes on them aswell.

I was thinking about this more, to come up with a better Visual device.
When it dawned on me that the Royal guard was also called "zero division"
hense the blank back. They are no longer representing their previous squads, so the squads emblium is removed and replaced with nothing representing zero, nada, nothing, zip, get the jist?

There are so many possibilites, im still in full support of him being the previous holder of the hogyoku, before Rukia.

Sounds reasonable, we'll just have to wait and see though. I saw that you mentioned vacancy of the throne, that was interesting.
I have this strange feeling that Isshin and Uryuu's father, played a huge roll in the past, and are going to play one in the future.

but in the flashback we didnt even see isshin as a captain so i dont think so pacman........ and wht is an insignia sorry for being ignorant ^_^

and about the vacancy wht exactly did u mean shiji-taiccho
