The more I get through on these mangas the more I think she is a captain. I am reading from the beginning and it seems that you can pick up on more things if you go back and reread them in order. Little tid bits I missed seem to stick out. Like little hints left by kubotite

oh shit, wouldnt that be a plot twist, ichigo's mother is unohana or something? i have my fingers crossed, this would make me super happy

Hmm good theory. My only questions would be how did the father retain his powers & skills when fighting Hollows? How does he have a zampacto (totally killed the splg I know)?

well i think im not sure that he was on a mission and he fell in love with ichigos mom...if he was a captain his only possibilitys are 10th and 11th becuase beside that the other divisions are ethier ran by a captain from the begining or they have already had replacements and if you do the math it dosent add up...

Not quite there could have been many captains changing over before all the ones we see now.

Could Isshin be the reason for the fall of the Shiba Clan
Maybe he was the oldest of the Shiba clan and did something that Lost them favor after Kaien died

Since Ichigo looks alot like Kaien maybe this is why

In episode 111 SPOILER ALERT Shinji claims he doesnt not recognize isshins reaitsu, meaning either Ishhin was a captain before or after shinji was. Also Granfisher states that if ichigos father is a shinigami then ichigo is of full blood that means, ichigos mother would have to also have been a shinigami
