Haha. That is one of the main topics of discussion at this point. We don't have a real answer. Only speculation.

Like how he wears a captain's jacket over his shoulder. If he was a captain he would wear it normally so I believe he is wearing the jacket of his wife. It's all up for argument though.

Isshin was a soul reaper about 20 years before the current storyline. He is speculated to be of captain class. The only two divisions that i could not find information on who the captain was at that time would be the 7th and 10th. The other divisions either have captains who were there during that time frame, or they were filled by current vizards with the exception of squad 6 who was filled by byakuya's grandfather. So he was captain of squad 7 or 10, or he wasn't a Captain.

But it doesn't say how many times the positions switched over. It only said that three were left from the original 13. So he could really be a captain of any squad if he is a captain at all.

He might have been the first person Kisuke turned into a shinigami when he went to the real world.
