I think he was in the same squad as rukia's brother cause when rukia's captain saw him he looked at him like he knew him and rukia's brother said something around the effect of nah thats not who think it is as in his old captain now i know thats quote for quote but something like that.

The royal guard is not part of the gotei.. And they were both reffering to Kaien Shiba, Gutt.

Urahara said that he gave up his Shinigami powers 20 years ago, which wouldn't fit if he stepped back as a captain 100 years ago. Also, it is implied that he doesn't know the true origin of the Vizards and that he only has heard of them, and furthermore, Shinji didn't recognize his reiatsu, which he should have if he was a captain in his time.
It could be that he had been the captain of 10th Squad before Toshiro Hitsugaya, as it would fit the fact that he, as mentioned before, lost his Shinigami powers 20 years ago, and that Hitsugaya became a captain not long after that.

I think his father is captain of the 4th since it makes most sense but I might be wrong

He might have been the captain of either the 3rd, 6th, or 10th. He can't be the 4th because of Unohana being the captain in turn back the pendulum. It is most likely the 3rd or 10th because I think Byakuya became the next captain after his grandfather.
