He was definitely a captain. I thought it was 10th squad as well. I'd like to see some flash backs. He's got me confused.

maybe he was 6th captain before byakuya was captain but after previous captain died

i have a theory about the captains, they were originally nobles, but theyn i think the shinagimie school was founded and started developing the power of for want of a more pc phrase the lower classes

I wanna know why/how he lost his powers. If it has anything to do with being in a gigai why didn't Kisuke make him one that allowed his powers to remain in tact like he did on himself and Tessai? I also want to know if he was born into a clan and why no one hasn't noticed Ichigo's name like Ukitake or the other older captains. I would also like to know why he keeps it from his son when it's clear that Ichigo's a Shinigami as well.

I also want to know why he left Soul Society if he was in trouble or somehow exhiled? I don't think it had anything to do Masaki... but I could be wrong. It would be really dumb if he lost his powers somehow over her.

actually I don't remember him even being mentioned durring the flashback arc explaining the origions of the Vaizard. in fact I don't think that he was even present.

and if he came to karakura town before then, I think someone would have made mention of the weird "immortal" guy that doesn't seem to age.

and as was mentioned earlier, someone should have made the connection between the kurosaki name if he had been a captain.

and isshin also reffered to himself as "captain CLASS" when he killed Grand Fisher, not a "Captain." therefore I would conclude that he was never a part of soul society proper, and somehow became a powerful shinigami through a different source.

can't say for sure what that source is, since I would need more info to do it.
