It's hard to believe he is a captain.

During the turn back the pendulum chapters he was'nt shown unless he was the kenpachi at the time which I doubt, although Urahara knows him none of the vizards are familiar with him.

It seems like he willingly took refuge in the real world and approched Urahara for help.

I've gathered that much so the conclusion that I have came too is that with Ichigo having huge amounts of reiatsu along with his other kids showing signs of spiritual pressure he might be a member of the royal guard???

Maybe but probably he's not a royal guard.
Me know the visard and he consider them "a criminal grup of ex-shinigami who use forbidden spells to acquire the power of hollows"
Also he said " we never found theys base of operation, nor uncovered their goals " "they are a tough one"
If he was from royal guard why he hunt the visard? That is a SS obligation.

I think they'd be keeping tabs on him in that case, they like to keep a sharp eye on Ichigo.

Substitute Shinigami is a position, how he got his powers has nothing to do with it XD
Plus, you either have powers or you don't, only thing that differs is the method of unlocking it.
