Naruto: Rise of a Ninja review

Posted 01-07-2008 at 06:50 AM by Daiyoukaiblade20

Hey everyone, I just got this game for Christmas so I thought I'd write a review blog about it LOL.

I wanted to try this game out for two reasons: One, because i like Naruto, its one of my favorite animes, and Two, because this is the first Naruto game that is out on the Xbox 360 exclusively.

The game was developed by Ubisoft Montreal (the same developer of games like FarCry and Assassin's Creed) this makes it the first Naruto game not developed by a Japanese developer. however, this unfortunately, means that, as a result, the game is based on the premace of the English dubbed series. this means that, along with some of the (in my opinion) questionable voice talent, there is less violence, profanity, and blood, which will bebeneficial to younger players and the parents of said players, but might seem a little disappointing to older fans of Naruto.

Even worse is that they couldn't even get many of the voice actors of the dubbed series to voice act for the game... thankfully, they got most of the important characters dubbed voices in, like Naruto (of course) Sasuke, Sakura, Kakashi, Gaara, etc. but the voices of Ebisu, Sarutobi, Iruka and especially Jiraya, Are HORRIBLE! I was especially disappointed with what they did with Jiraya's voice in this game and was kind of surprised they couldn't get the real voice actor in there.

Another flaw in the game is it's story length. it begins from the very beginning of the series, but ends right at the end of the Invasion of Konoha arc. this isn't a BIG problem or anything, but it was a personal disappointment for me since it meant I was denied the ability to use the Rasengan

despite all of this however, the game itself is actually really fun to play! the game is played in two different ways. the first part is like spider man 2 or Assassin's Creed, where you, as Naruto are immersed in a very well detailed Konohagakure (Hidden Leaf Village), in which you are able to jump over buildings, walk up the walls and grind on the wires at the very top of the buildings. while doing all of this exploration, you are also able to perform many different missions for the people of the village. usually ranging from tasks like gathering coins, fighting bandits, and even performing the Sexy Jutsu (or Ninja Centerfold, if you prefer the manga name) on a few heartbroken villagers. usually doing these quests will increase Naruto's health and Chakra and also earn him money (ryous). but some quests also award training points, which allow naruto to learn new attack combos and jutsu and even open up new areas in the village!

The second part is like many other naruto games out there: a fighting style game. this usually occurs when you encounter an enemy or are training. the style of fighting is similar to most naruto games: using fighting combos and jutsu. however, there are a few changes to how it works. to perform jutsu, for example, you have to move both control sticks up in a certain pattern (simulating making hand signs, don't worry, it's not as complicated at it is in the anime). then you have to build your chakra up to the appropriate amount (indicated by a fat, blue line). then the game enters a sequence where you have to (in naruto's case) press buttons at the right time in order to have the jutsu do alot of damage to the target. in this game Naruto is limited to only three jutsu: his famous Sexy Jutsu, the Shadow Clone Jutsu, and chakra concentration, which boosts his attack power for a short time. naturally, this game comes with a VS mode, so you can fight using the Konoha 11 and many others, who all have their own unique Jutsu and ways in which to perform them. for naruto, however, he is able to use these jutsu both in and out of combat, allowing him to overcome obstacles in story mode.

Naturally, the storyline is pretty solid as it follows the anime directly with only a few detours and story deviations to make the game less predictable. travel to other places in the game is also interesting. If you ever wanted play a Naruto game where you could jump through trees like they do in the anime, you will get that opportunity here!

Overall, the game was really fun for me! it was different from most Naruto games, different in a good way. One of the best parts about it being an xbox 360 exclusive is you get downloadable content, which include new characters to fight with and even the original Japanese dub! (which im glad to say, seems to have most, if not all, of the original Japanese voice actors!) I'd say if you are a fan of Naruto its definetly worth a rent or a buy. if your not, then at least rent this game because it's very entertaining.
I give it a 4 out of 5 (yes like X-play, except you know THEY won't be so impressed)

Very nicely written review on Naruto for the X360 I actually played this game during ComicCon 07 multiplayer and I was impressed with it as far as that went, but come on do you seriously expect story from any anime game lol most of the story is in the anime, the game is just something to do while waiting for a new epi to be released lmao. But yea I love most of the naruto games except the GC ones at the moment.

I'm a fan that got the game for Christmas last year and was verrrrrrrrrrrrry upset to find the game only lasted 6 days of playing. (with a 40hr work week) I was insulted that all the players were not available to play in fight mode, and that you have to buy them/find them online. The game should have been much longer than it was, although the challenges were simple enough. Maybe I'm getting too old for anime games.
