I dunno where that title came from. I thought about how I love movies and how people think I'm nuts. Nuts led me to crazy which led me to bats in the belfry et viola! Movie Bats! Someone saner might have used Movie Nuts since it makes sense, but yeah.. that ain't me.

Poor Casting Ruins Live Action

Posted 01-25-2009 at 02:57 AM by Engima

I haven't blogged here in quite sometime. Sorry 'bout that, but it's not like I was missed. I've been surpassed a few times over as having the most blog entries. The only reason I'm updating is out of curiosity.

Judging from the Avatar: Last Airbender thread quite a few people love the show and a couple liken it to trash. No matter how you feel about it, I'm wondering how you guys feel about the announced casting. In case you've not heard the 4 leads, who, if you've not seen the show, are obviously of Asian or Innuit decent and are drawn with dark pigmentation, are all being played by Caucasian actors. The star of the movie is Jesse McCartney I do believe. Apparently, M. Night Shymalan wanted only white actors to play these Asian characters. The casting call specified "Caucasian or any ethnicity," meaning white actors were the priority. I know a few Asian actors, two of whom went up for parts, and never heard word one. Today in Philadelphia, there was an open casting for extras they asked people to dress casually or in their tribal costumes. So, apparently it's ok to be non-Caucasian to be hanging out in the background.

Personally, this angered and saddened me for several reasons. It not only insults me as a person of color, but it insults me as an American. Basically what Night and Paramount pictures is saying is that the American public would not watch a movie with an all Asian cast. Something I know is absolute rubbish.

Even if you don't give a screw about the animation or it's live action, I was wondering how you guys felt about such an offensive miscasting. By the way, Paramount is also the company that was behind casting Angelina Jolie in the role of a light skinned black woman 2 years ago.It might not be black face, but are beige & yellow face acceptable? How far behind is red face?

Unfortunately this is nothing new En. If you read back in Asian history of Theatre, you will find that men played Geisha roles, and today Men still play those roles just out of tradition and to attract the tourist.

Just 58 years ago, it wasn't looked down upon to act "in black face." And Natives are ALWAYS dressed "traditionally" when in reality that dress is for special ceremonial celebrations only and rarely worn. Yet in movie after movie that show them with frickin' feathers all over their hair.

Even before my white ancestors came to this coast, Natives did not wear this kind of dress everyday. They had to hunt and plant, and fight to stay alive...you think they did that in a nine foot tall feather hat? srly? rly?

It pisses me off too. good blog!
