I was challenged a while back to make 2 lists. One of all the anime I've seen and am watching. It's embarrassing long and incomplete because I can't remember them all. Hell, I've been watching anime longer than some of you guys have.. existed. Japanimation/anime hadn't been coined but that's what they were. You might not count repeats of Speed Racer, Lupin III, Marine Boy, Astro Boy, etc. as anime but I do. To bad for you. The 2nd list is, you guessed, all the Asian drama I've watched or am watching. It's incomplete, too, but it's also shorter. I thought it would be a cool thing to post, but thre isn't a general drama section or thread. General talk is separated by country. *yawn* I don't want to make 3 separate posts. I haven't seen a Felipino or Singaporean drama yet. I have a Felipino one downloaded and an actor from a Singaporean one has offered to send me a copy of one he's in.

I have seen at least 1 episode of all these dramas. Any dropped are noted. Favs have asterisks. Currently watching are bold. Alright, on with the list:

Poor Casting Ruins Live Action

I haven't blogged here in quite sometime. Sorry 'bout that, but it's not like I was missed. I've been surpassed a few times over as having the most blog entries. :) The only reason I'm updating is out of curiosity.

Judging from the Avatar: Last Airbender thread quite a few people love the show and a couple liken it to trash. No matter how you feel about it, I'm wondering how you guys feel about the announced casting. In case you've not heard the 4 leads, who, if you've not seen the show, are obviously of Asian or Innuit decent and are drawn with dark pigmentation, are all being played by Caucasian actors. The star of the movie is Jesse McCartney I do believe. Apparently, M. Night Shymalan wanted only white actors to play these Asian characters. The casting call specified "Caucasian or any ethnicity," meaning white actors were the priority. I know a few Asian actors, two of whom went up for parts, and never heard word one. Today in Philadelphia, there was an open casting for extras they asked people to dress casually or in their tribal costumes. So, apparently it's ok to be non-Caucasian to be hanging out in the background.

Personally, this angered and saddened me for several reasons. It not only insults me as a person of color, but it insults me as an American. Basically what Night and Paramount pictures is saying is that the American public would not watch a movie with an all Asian cast. Something I know is absolute rubbish.

Even if you don't give a screw about the animation or it's live action, I was wondering how you guys felt about such an offensive miscasting. By the way, Paramount is also the company that was behind casting Angelina Jolie in the role of a light skinned black woman 2 years ago.It might not be black face, but are beige & yellow face acceptable? How far behind is red face?

Back on July 25th I posted a list of dramas (and anime) I was watching/had watched. Since then I've completed:

Meteor Garden - really enjoyed it; fun to watch;
Meteor Rain - stories of the guys before and/or during the main story of MG. I think since they made the guys into a singing group, they made MR for marketing; and
Meteor Garden 2 - amnesia has a ploy is so over done, it's only worth it to see what happened with the supports.

I'm currently watching Wish to See You Again, Dragon Zakura. I have the first 5 subbed episodes of Code Blue downloaded. I also decided to bump Yasha up my list but my crush on Hideaki Ito is too strong. I must wait. That man would be in so much trouble if we were to meet in a dark alley. I've been trying to find Mars, but can't.

I wasn't sure what to make of Dorm. I thought at best it might be purposefully humorous and at worse unintentionally funny. I'm happy to say the former is correct. Dorm start curiously with a young boy being sent to a boarding school that resembles a home for the mentally ill more than any school. It turns into a sweet film about loneliness, friendship, and the relationships that develop when you have no one else. The young actors led Charlie Trairat as Ton are wonderful. The adults aren't half bad either. If you're interested in an entertaining, well written, and atypical ghost movie with a good story, you can't do much better than Dorm.

I ususally don't do this. This being writing discussion posts that obviously belong in the forums. Why? A) It's kinda dumb to say post a question about Naruto in a blog when there's an entire section devoted to it. That's an example. I have no clue if any of you have done that. If you have and now your pissed, get over it kid. There's a lot more in this world to be angry over. Secondly, I remember this post by PSP. However, my post has few topics that would hit a few boards and I don't want to seperate it because I'm lazy damnit and I don't wanna! So there!

OK now that I've had a minor mini tantrum. I'm gonna post my currently watching lists for anime and drama. I was wondering what everyone was watching. I covered lazy. Let me now introduce nosey. Me first!
Gokusen 1 & 2
Tatta Hitotsu no Koi
Kurosagi (movie was disappointing)
Nobuta wo Produce
Sushi Oji - boring as hell
Binbo Danshi - lead character was overly annoying
Yuran Club
Proposal Daisakusen
So, what I wanna know is what have you guys been watching, what are you watching, what did you hate, etc.? I said I was nosey. Dang. I probably shouldn't admit this but all those dramas have been since November maybe December. Could be January. I have no clue. I said it once, I'll say it again, "Yup, I'm an addict."

Iron Monkey (1993)
If you've not seen Iron Monkey, you can't call yourself an action or martial arts fan. IM is quirky, campy, and fun, but it's alsow well acted and written. The martial arts action scenes are fantastic and to be honest I preferred them over more popular movies like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. It's a short film (less than 90 minutes) and fun from beginning to end. 4.5 out of 5 stars

Suicide Club (Jisatsu Circle)
Suicide Club (Jisatsu Circle) has been put in the JHorror catergory, however, little about it is scary thought the concept is horrific. Mass suicides are happening across Japan. The police are baffled. They know it's not a coincidence, but they can not find the common denominator. One intrepid detective risks everything to figure out who, how, and why. I liked Suicide Club. I wanted to love it, but I didn't. There's one reason: the end sucked. It's easy to figure the who, but we never find out why nor are we 100% on the how. I haven't seen SC since 2003, but I remember it was well acted and up to the last 15 minutes or so I was really enjoying it. It has a degree of possibility that makes it creepy. 3 out of 5 stars.

That's not an exaggeration. I watch more dramas than I do anime. I'll finish a 30 episode drama in 2-3 weeks if I'm watching 1 or 2 other short ones simultaneously. If I'm not watching anything else, I'm done in less than 2 weeks (5 days if the episodes are a half hour). I blame the Hollywood writers and purveyors of all things reality. If those writer bastards hadn't gone on strike, I wouldn't have watched Gokusen live action and it wouldn't have slipped into the 9th ring-ding of couch potato hell. I've always watched Asian shows off and on, but I'm obsessed now. My friends are talking intervention. I say, "Kiss my booty and lay yo' hands off my remote." (I've taken to calling my mouse a remote.) NnnnEeeewaaaaaaay...

Dark, et al have some cool shows (and movies) up for my..uh.. our viewing pleasure with more to come over at DC. From what I can tell there's something for everyone depending on your preference. Here's a quick list of the dramas I've seen with my not so quick opinion.

THE DEVIL - best show ever; gotta love cop dramas & investigation; this one is about revenge and masterful manipulations!
Gokusen (1-3) - 1-good; 2-ok but I like the cast; 3-it's a traffic accident & I'm a rubbernecker
Detective Conan - thought Shun was too old to be Conan but I liked it; anime is preferable though
Kurosagi - loved it; gotta love a righteous con man
Proposal Daisakusen - really good romantic comedy; well acted
Water Boys - I quit watching it; too many skinny little bodies; will prob try again
Yukan Club - alright; kept reminding me of Scooby Doo without well.. Scooby. Why do Japanese guys look so good in drag?

Yasha is on my list to watch. MY interest peaked cuz I thought stupidly thought it was a live action Inu Yasha. (Stop laughing at me. That's not funny. Is not infintiy! You can't have anything past infinity. You suck!) I'll probably watch it after I finish one of the ones I'm watching now. I don't know why I decided to watch 2- 1 hour dramas, Sword Stained With Royal Blood (Chinese) and Time Between Man & Wolf (Korean), at the same time.

edit: 7/7 @ 0226 - I think I really do need an intervention. Since I entered this post, I started and finished a Jdrama, Attention Please including a special. :o

While not as good as the original, this remake of the Pang Brothers' Jian Guai is pretty good. The script could've been a little better and they cut out some of the lead character's investigation, but thanks to Jessica Alba, something I never thought I'd ever say, this movie manages to capture the essence of the original and deliver some tense scenes. Production wise, The Eye is pretty solid. The cast is decent and the cg/efx work is creepy enough. Though I found the script weak, The Eye is actually one of the best remakes of an Asian horror. By no means am I saying it's better than the original, but it's not half bad.

***************

The original has 3 sequels (Jian Gui 2, 10 *shrug*, and 3. Yes, that's the right order.). I've seen the original, #s 2 & 10 and liked all three. I wasn't scared (it takes a lot to scare me) but I was creeped out a bit by 1 & 2. The 3rd installment of the Pang's series, #10, is primarily a comedy. The ghosts aren't scarey though one is kinda nasty. The brothers poke fun at themselves and other horror movies. It's silly, but I liked it.

edit: The Eye 10 and The Eye 3 same exact movie.

Cello is a good solid ghost story reminiscent of the ghost stories of old. There are some ghostly effects, but not many. Cello relies mostly on it's cast to relay the fear, dread, confusion, etc and they do a great job. The script is solid and the director built suspense well although a better use of shadows would have made it creepier. The big reveal was obvious to me, but I wasn't quite sure how we were going to get there. All in all, this was a good flick. And I'm sure someone in Hel-lay is already planning on ruining it.

It's a Korean movie so be prepared for subs. I'm sure there are probably dubs on the disc, but they probably suck. By the way, my sister saw it on the Sundance channel a couple of days ago, but it is floating around online. :D

After my second time (I think) to Mexico, I brought back a little 8 legged friend that bit me near my elbow. My arm began to swell. In less than a day the poison in my system was visible. In 2 days my arm was turning bright red. Where it was red, the skin was hot and hard like a giant mass was there. I went to work and within an hour the mass was almost twice it's size as was my arm.

The medical staff at work gave me 2 options: call your doctor and see him now or we're sending you to the hospital. My doctor was on vacay so I saw another in his office. She gave me antibiotics saying the bite was infected. They didn't work. The next day she gave me another round of antibiotics stating if they didn't work in the next __ (I forgot the number) of hours, she was sending me the hospital for intravenous antibiotics. She also stated if that didn't work...trailed off.. "Are you right or left handed?" jigga wha? aw heyll naw. y'all ain't cuttin' off my arm! "Right handed."

The specified hours were up and the antibiotics actually were working. The mass got smaller. The next day she saw a marked difference so she sent me to a plastic surgeon, Dr. Lo, so I wouldn't have a giant scar. He's one of the guys that work on those really tug at your heart string pro bono cases of children with cleft lips and siamese kids, etc. Anywho, he cut my arm and was squeezing for I don't know how long (no anthesia). He took out over 2cc's of pus and ick. He wouldn't let me see (and truly I didn't want to). Then he packed my arm. All in all it took over a week after seeing doctor Lo for my arm to go back down to normal. That's how I found out I'm allergic to spiders (most biting/stinging insects actually).

What brought this up? Well, last week my thumb had a little knot on it. Two days later I couldn't move it. It was 3x larger than my other thumb, red... get the picture. A damn spider bit my friggin thumb. I'm on a strong antibiotc for 2 weeks. Luckily, it's working and a prescription strenght pain reliever.

Lucky me! :(

edit: I totally forgot something. So, the very next day after I get the meds from the doc, I go to get the mail and damned if there wasn't a brown spider in my mail. That was Friday. Today, there were 2!!! Hmmm now that I think about it, the Post Master for my area may be out to get my sister (she's complainzilla) and I'm collateral damage. Damn the post office and their nefarious plot!

You read the title right. A Japanese homeless woman was found living in a man's closet. She'd been in the closet (oh man I'm lmao while typing this)... Girlfriend had been up in the closet for a year. She had a mattress and errthang. The guy who lived in the apartment set up security cameras that sent digi pix to his cell after he noticed food was missing. Food missing!!? How much food did he have that it took him a whole year to say, 'hmm my ramen looks low?' He called the police after he got images showing someone walking around his place after he'd left.

But seriously though.. A YEAR!! How does someone live in your place and you never see them. It's not like the Japanese have these big giant Mariah Cary closets that go on for days. The article said she showered and was very neat. That's what killed me. She was neat! God forbid a slob move into your closet. How neat was she I wonder. Did she clean? What did he think he had? Dust fairies that cleaned his place? I bet in a month he's gonna be like 'damn, I wish that b*tch was still in my closet.'

What I wanna know is if she ever peaked while he was getting dressed. I would have no doubt about it. No pain. No gain. No peaky. No sleepy. I have a plethora of other questions, but most of you are way too young for me to post.

I know the guy is probably weirded out and devastated, but to me it's pure comedy.

What a large title for a not so large movie. To his credit, Ford was great. Too bad no one else was. Conceptually, the story was an interesting one. The writers were obviously inspired by archeaologist Erickh von Daniken. The story, itself, wasn't good enough. It lacks the wit and charm of the previous 3 movies. There's nothing new in this movie, but there is the familiar. Before I realized I was counting the movies: The Mummy, Close Encounters, Independence Day, etc. Even the last National Treasure movie makes an appearance and it wasn't totally original itself. They made a point of mentioning the technology of a superior race, but didn't really show it. If there's a superior technology at play, let's see it? The traps should have been exceptional. They weren't.

On the whole the cast was good, but not great. I could've forgiven miscastings, slightly off timing, or Cate Blanchet's inability to keep her 'Boris & Natasha moose and squirrel' accent had there been the slightest iota of charisma amongst the cast. I prayed for cameos by Jonathan Rhys-Davies and/or Sean Connery just so Ford wasn't the only actor worth watching. The only character that had the potential to give us great scenes with Ford was played by the fantastic John Hurt, but they didn't have the chance. I felt as if Hurt had been reigned in. Yes, yes there was banter, but it just wasn't good enough. If the hope was that Ford and Shia LeBeouf would have that magic spark, they were sadly mistaken.

When you dissect it, Crystal Skull lacked a lot. It's not a great movie, but it's alright. Nostalgia hounds like me will just have to be happy with seeing Harrison Ford in that brown fedora.

The last week of April I thought I should be getting my reviews together. The first weekend in May I told myself to post it. It's almost the end of May, I'm doing just that. I've spent most of my time watching foreign tv instead of movies (and American tv) and only when I wasn't studying Japanese and planning my trip.

The Movies:
Sweeney Todd (2007) - stupendous!
Wristcutters: A Love Story - disappointing
The Good Night - wasteful
Dedication - really good
MP's Life of Brian - stupid
AVP 2 - heartbreaking
Crazy Eights - alright
Hogfather - excellent
Unearthed - predictable
The Game Plan eh
88 Minutes - thrill-lite
Lars and the Real Girl - great
27 Dresses - un- (interesting, romantic, funny)
Zebraman - quirky

Monthly Must See:
In all honesty if I were to recommend any of these movies it would be either Hogfather, which is technically not a movie as it aired on the BBC, or Lars and the Real Girl. Both are creative, well filmed, and extremely well acted. So it depends on your tastes. Would you rather see a fantasy Christmas-like story where Death is the hero or one about the extremes of loneliness, friendship, and the depths of the human heart?

Random Review:
I refuse to believe that I'm the only person that has the insatiable desire to slap the crap out of Gwyneth Paltrow. Even when I like the character, I still want to slap her. Right now, at this very moment, I feel the exact same way about her brother, Jake. He had something. He had a spark of an idea and he lost it. The Good Night is not a romantic comedy. The Good Night is neither romance nor comedy. It's a wannabe. Wannabe drama. Wannabe funny. Wannabe endearing. Wannabe funny. Oops! I said that. If Jake Paltrow intended this to be a comedy. He failed miserably. There are bits of biting wit and sarcasm that are peppered into this bland milquetoast of a movie. It's difficult to watch TGN from beginning to end. The only reason to finish is for Simon Pegg. His scenes with or without Martin Freeman are the best in the entire movie. Unfortunately, they are few. I'm fighting hard to find something positive. Oh, it's well filmed. There, that's something positive about an otherwise dull and sad movie.

I reeeeeeeeeeeeally want this doll/action figure thingy of Matsumoto. Me likey da dolls. Actually, I collect certain Barbies. I told you guys before I was a female. This proves it! And this one is screaming my name. Rankiku is one of my favorite shinigami from Bleach. The only reason why I haven't bought it, besides price, is that she's porcelain or something. They didn't get her Farrah flip right. If her hair were synthetic, I'd own Matsu by now. waaaaaaaaaah Gimme Matsu-chan!! That's it. I just wanted to whine.
