The strangest thing happened to me the other day:

I was pulling up to the house of a friend whose kids I was going to watch for a few hours, and I parked out by the curb in front of their house (which is on a cul-de-sac), dodging kids racing by on scooters and shooting hoops in driveways and whatnot. As I took the key out of the ignition and started grabbing my stuff, one of those random-observation, not-actually-thinking-about-it thoughts flew threw my head: "Why are there kids outside?"

Dude.

Think about that for a sec. I actually had to stop and marvel at what my own mind had subconsciously brought forward: the fact that I thought it was strange that kids were playing outside on a spring afternoon--just like I used to do when I was their age--instead of inside watching TV or playing video games. How is it even possible that things have changed so much in so short a time? Since when is it a rarity to see kids playing in the street? And, most importantly, how on earth did I miss this transition?

Ok, I'm gonna get all crazy-random-thought on you guys here. Ready?

One of my favorite things to do is figure out how to manipulate people. Yes, that sounds weird. But it's fun! I love getting into a situation that needs some serious people skills and figuring out how to get out of it.

For instance, say you accidentally just totally pissed off an old lady. And not the sweet, cookie-baking, pinch-your-cheeks kind, either. The nasty, cranky, whack-you-upside-the-head-with-her-fifty-pound-fanny-pack kind. Now, say you absolutely must calm this lady down, at all costs. (And no, I don't mean pull out your concealed weapon and blast her yapping mouth off. I know one of you has got to be thinking that, but no. Just no.) You need to calm down this old lady using your words only. How do you do it?

I would first assume the innocent, humble, apologetic inferior attitude. Be sure to really stress that you're young and naive, and that she's wise and all-knowing. "I'm so sorry, I was being stupid, let me help walk you across the street, did you know you look just like Mother Theresa?" etc. Generally that calms most irritated people, which is why it is usually my first approach. Just about everybody likes a person who will beat themself up just to make you look good. People go nuts for that self-sacrificial crap. Like it or not, I've found it's almost always the case.

If the first approach doesn't melt the cranky old sucker, I would make excuses. Anything that pops into your head, really. The more pitiful, the better. Make her blush for snapping at a poor little thing like you. "I didn't get much sleep last night; my aunt died this morning; I guess I forgot to take my medication for my bipolar disorder again (whoopsie!); I have a life threatening illness that makes me say things I don't mean," and the list goes on.

Sadly, the chances that she will bite at one of those excuses is slim, so try to make it as believable as possible. If she still hates you, now is the time to go on the offensive. This takes a little work, but it can be done. You need to convince her that she heard incorrectly. Make up something that sounds like what you actually said and bet your hide on the fact that most senior citizens are hard of hearing. It takes a very smooth talker to convince someone that they didn't hear what they really did just hear. Tricky, but relatively doable.

If you've gotten this far, and the lady is still ready to bite your ear off, then either A) you really suck at this, or B) she doesn't take any crap from young whippersnappers like you. The best thing to do is go back to the first method. Apologize a thousand times over (and try to look at least a little contrite while you're at it). If she still hasn't caved, then she probably never will. Announce your sincerest apologies a few more times, then get the heck out of there.

So, that is one little scenario. There are many more, but for now, I'll just let you mull this one over and hope I haven't fried your brains with my strange thought patterns.
