Drunken Review 18: Mirai Nikki

April 25th
21:17 (MY LAIR)
Opened the first can of beer, played some SC2 with a friend while chatting through Skype

23:30 (IN THE LOBBY)
Games are starting to go bad... one beer... two beer... too many beer

April 26th
0:17 (MY COMPUTER)
I decided to do a drunken reviews of Mirai Nikki. Finished sixth-ish(?) beer... time to write.

0:20 (WORDPAD)
I finished Mirai Nikki two days ago and it made me confused. Though not in a good way. How often we are confused in a good way? I have no idea. The problem with Mirai Nikki is that it is a "serious" shounen anime but it falls flat down on the baseline of all what is shounen... battle. That made sense? Not yet i suppose...

0:25 (STILL IN WORDPAD)
Mirai Nikki is exactly what the title implies to... future diaries. Our protagonist Yukkii-kun is somewhat introverted guy who does not have any real connections with other people except his "imaginary" friends (who are actually GODS!... but getting rather old and rusty). He keeps a diary that is his comfort, until he discovers that the diary actually tells him the future, as he would have written it already before the actual events. This leads him to abuse the powers of the diary, and of course drawing in attention of... who else... other future diary holders. AND so the games begin. We have a battle royale of 12 diary users to determine who becomes the next god of time and shizz (because our own god is getting rather old and rusty... as i mentioned).

0:33 (VISITING THE BATHROOM)
Mirai Nikki claims to be a psychological thriller. This of course makes me to think that we have another Death Note type anime where we have these awesome battles of wits while trying to overcome other diary users. However this is not how it's going to turn out. Mirai Nikki is just an action anime with little points spent on the brainy part.
The potential is enormous, but the story fails in numerous occations. It's not "narratively coherent". It's just random BS that just seems "convenient" at the time. The problem is that the arcs are like Super Mario Brothers. You finish one boss, and the next level is clearly separated from the previous one. There is really nothing that ties up the story until the end (except Akise-kun).

0:40 (HITTING MY HEAD TO THE WALL)
Characters are the biggest issue with this anime. Why all the other diary users are brutal bastards and our protagonist is a total wussy? And yes... he remains as a total wussy until the end. There is practically no progression at all on any character. Other diary users are expendable, and the supporting characters are either boring (Yukkii's friends) or total copies of each others (diary users). Only thing that changes is the way how their diaries predicts the future.
Luckily there are some characters that carry the show. Like Gasai Yuno who is totally batshit insane (lovely lovelove rokyoku extra points for that <3). She and Akise-kun are the two core characters that you should watch during the series. The protagonist feels like a passenger... or even worse... a supporting character.

0:50 (BACK AT THE WORDPAD)
Don't get me wrong. Some of the characters are really good. They just don't get the proper attention. Akise-kun, Gasai-chan and Uryuu-chan are solid characters. Even Kurusu Keigo-kun seems to be promising. The most interesting things happen when these characters are involved. The problem is that the story goes on with no real grasp of the central conflict. "I want to win because...". Everything seems half-assed and just total random mayhem of bodyparts and one-liners flying through the air. There are no suprises, the characters do not seem real and everyone is willing to accept the next leap without question.

0:55 (MOAR BEER AND TOILET BRAKE)
The whole story of Mirai Nikki is as transparent as my piss. It has so much power behind it, but it falls into the bowl and swirls down to oblivion as i flush the toilet. However there are many good things in this anime, unfortunately they are not used to their full potential. I lost my faith in the point where they introduce the fights where the diary users just read the future events while landing punches and countering others. "He kicks from the left side"... "He punches with his right hand". WHAT THE F*CK?!?! Who in the name of cheeseburger-christ would be able to read this sh1t from a cell phone while doing one on one brawl that requires fast thinking and reflexes? There is nothing that even suggests something intelligent that happened with Death Note.

1:00 (FINAL CONCLUSION)
So... there we have it. My future diary has the power of telling utter bullshit from something good. Therefore Mirai Nikki receives a 6 out of 10. It's not totally worthless, but it's not good either. The soundtrack is one that gave one extra point to the total score. I have to admit that there is one totally kickass tune that rolls in just at the right spot, but it's a bit repetitive. Still i would've liked to see so much more from this series. The ending... in a way... is rushed. Even though it is "artistically" ok. BUT it doesn't make the story coherent. Why everything has to happen in the end?... i have no idea...

DEAD END

Good grief! Remind me to never watch this anime...though I likely will out of plain curiosity and because a part of my mind always has a tendency to think, "Hey give it a shot, you may like it after all" xP.

The "Transparent as my piss" part was hilarious just as Luna noted xD. Mind you that doesn't look too good for your pee, you've been drinking way too many fluids!

More than anything it sounds like you had the time of your life writing this drunken review even if the anime itself was a major disappointment so watching it was worthwhile in the end n_n.

p.s. it's great reading you again Kyo ^^.

Watch it and judge for yourself. I quite liked this show. It has better story than most other anime's out there.
Yes the main guy is a wuss, but he does grow some balls towards the end. I always watch a show myself and judge it based on that. Some people like things others dont.
I still think its worth watching. I enjoyed it..especially towards the end.
    P.S. Yuno is nucking futs.
    Funny review though. hah

Yeah, the ball was dropped fast. It had more plot holes than Bleach and it was far shorter.
