Scroll 8: Vin's Past (Part 2)

very much. I felt the warm wind brush my cheeks, listened to the leaves fall over the grass, the sound of a fist fight, a staff clashing with another staff, Per’s grunt as Vin swept him off his feet. I chuckled at that sentence.
I sat next to Eron, he was nice, of only he was not manically obsessed about me, we would be very good friends, in fact, we were good friends, but there was always that awkward moment where he made clear he liked me.
-So, what did Per do now?- I asked, and, at the same time Vin dodged Per’s staff and ripped it off his hands.
-Nothing really, we’re having a on-the-floor training.- He explained, and, noticing my confused expression, he explained. –It’s a no-harm match, you can’t use anything that is harmful, only your fists, it is also known as hand or close combat. As Vin and Per are in the back line on normal fights, they are allowed their staffs and their magic to fight, the one that gets their opponent on the floor and is able to sit on top of him or her is the winner.- He concluded.
-When you say back line in normal fights, what do you mean?- I inquired.
-You see, when fighting a single opponent, everyone, as a team has positions, there is the front line and the back line. The front line is the one closest to the opponent, this line is only in charge of harming the opponent, and the back line is in charge of backing up the front line, which is the one that takes the damage for the team.
And there are three types of fighters; the front liner, which in our case is Ike and you, you two are the ones that need more strength and brute force, you cant hesitate or stop in a fight, because that would mean your death in a serious fight, the back liner, which are Vin and Per, they are spell casters, you see, they cant be in the front line because casting a spell takes time, and they cant be bothered while doing it, so while the front liners attack, the back liners cast spells. Per casts offensive spells, and Vin casts healing and defensive spells, that leaves me and Maple, we are mid-liners, which means we can either be in the back line of the front line. Maple’s power allows her to be in the most helpful position, either backing up or attacking. And I am working in my back line, I am really good in the front line, but we have to be balanced, and for the team to balanced we need another mid-liner, you are just learning to use the sword, Ike’s power can’t be used from the back line, so that leaves me.- Eron knew a lot about fighting, I was amazed, not only he knew, but he understood how it worked, and he was good at explaining it.
-Wow Eron, you know a lot about… The battle… Stations?- He laughed.
-Strategy, beasty, strategy.- He said.
-Oh, well you know a lot about strategies Eron.- I praised.
-This is just the basic stuff beasty, when we’re done with you you’ll know way much more than this.- As he said this, Per turned into a rope and tied Vin’s feet together, she tripped and fell on her back, but before Per could turn back she was on her feet again, she raced towards Per, who had just turned back and kicked him in the chest. At this attack, Per caught hold of Vin’s leg and pulled her towards him, she raised her staff towards him but he turned Vin’s leg around and she lost balance but managed to kick him in the face with her other leg, as she flip-flapped away from him empty-handed. Per threw Vin’s staff at her, and as she attempted to grab it, the staff turned into a rock that Vin scarcely evaded.
-That was dangerous.- Vin sighed, more to herself than to anyone else.
-Come on Hun, is that all you’ve got?- Per taunted.
-Not really, I was just warming up sweetie.- Vin snapped back.
-Well that is amazing because if that is it then we could just call it a.- As Per kept talking, Vin disappeared from where she was and darted towards Per, but they started moving at an amazing speed that my eyes could not follow. Amazingly, all my companions seemed to be able to follow their movements easily, whereas all my family looked quite confused. I had seen them move at this speed, and was shocked by it, now I was used to them moving that fast, but I had never managed to follow their movements, so I guessed it was nothing you could train your eye to see.
I could see as all my family squinted their eyes to try and understand what was going on, and I resigned to my very, very normal and powerless eye and took some time to look at the landscape, but I found myself contemplating all the people gathered around the fight, which was now filled with afterimages of Vin and Per, sometimes there would be a flying staff, a grunt or a giggle, but it would go on. My eyes went from Ike to Liz, then from my mother to my father and after they would fixate on Eron.
I just couldn’t figure him out yet, it is as if he has two personalities, one was completely obsessed with me, and would do anything to have me, but the other one was completely different, it was very nice, I could totally stand it, I actually was starting to like that part of Eron.
After five minutes of this sped up fight, I started getting bored, so I started thinking about Vin’s healing power, and suddenly became uneasy with the trail my thoughts were going.
-Hey Eron, what if somehow the opponent gets to Vin and there is no one there to help her out?- I asked, now very upset about this possibility, which made my voice very tense, almost as if I was going to cry.
-Don’t worry beasty, she and Per have already discussed that possibility, and Ike made them a special dagger that fits in the sole of their shoes, that is in the worse case scenario, just so they can hold until one of us appears.- He explained.
-That’s clever- I said, as I sighed in relief – It is kind of awful though.- I added.
-Not really, we just try to patch up everyone’s weak spots, but since we are a team, we shouldn’t be separated to fight, that is the way it is thought to be, but at the same time we are prepared for everything. Besides, Vin’s a beast when it comes to fighting, just watch.- He said.
-Well, I would but I have a little sight problem, see, I really can not follow such speed, nor can any member of our family.- I said, and pointed at my father, who was so concentrated in the fight that his face was twisted in a very awkward way.
Eron cracked up at my father’s attempts to see the fight and his laugh was so contagious I couldn’t help but laughing too.
Suddenly, Vin stopped moving, and Per disappeared, she looked around, knowing he was around, waiting for the exact moment to break her defense. Vin abruptly let go of her staff and fell on the floor, and, as she tried standing up, Per appeared sitting on top of her with both staffs on his hands.
-Gotcha.-Per said. He stood up and quickly got Vin on her feet, she dusted herself and snatched her staff from her boyfriend’s hands.
-Nicely done, sweetie, but you’re still not match for me.- Per said, he pulled Vin close and kissed her.
-Well, you know on-the-floor is not exactly my specialty, I can still kick your ass in knock-out though.- She said.
-Okay, the winner is Per, so now it’s Eron’s turn to go against Per.- My father said.
-Exactly- Eron exclaimed –Now, if you’ll excuse me beasty, I have to kick some ass.- He said, and as he stood up and got in a fighting stance, Vin took his place next to me.
-Nicely done Vin, you’re very good at this.- I praised.
-Not really, I’m the worse fighter, but I’m getting better.- She said.
The second the match started, Eron darted towards Per and landed a very painful looking kick on his stomach.
-He got him good.- Ike said.
-That must have hurt.- I said, Vin, Liz and my parents just looked away.
Per just stood there, with his face twisted in a painful look, white as snow and barely breathing, but when Eron turned away from him, he grinned and winked at me, and rapidly changed back to his painful look. I had to bite my lip to repress a giggle.
-Thank you, thank you very much.- Eron bowed at everyone. – It is my pleasure and delight to kick the old man’s butt any time you like. Vin, just call me anytime, I am going to start charging by the bruise though.- He grinned stupidly and kept bragging about his self-proclaimed victory, and Per took that time to recover from the blow and make himself invisible.
-Huh? Where’s the geezer?-
-When are you going to learn Eron?- Per asked, still invisible.
Eron suddenly tripped forward and kept his balance only to get punched in the face by Per, who slowly appeared, as he punched and kicked Eron and he fought back.
Several gasps, moans and flying kicks later, Eron fell on his stomach and did not have time to stand up, because Per san on top of him and hit his head with his staff.
-How many times do I have to tell you… Make sure you have won before claiming victory, you’re an easy target if you’re careless.- Eron stood up with Per on his back, he sled down and fell on his feet.
-I just thought I had you with that punch. Did it hurt?- Eron smirked evilly and dusted his pants.
I sat next to Eron, he was nice, of only he was not manically obsessed about me, we would be very good friends, in fact, we were good friends, but there was always that awkward moment where he made clear he liked me.
