Scroll 8: Vin's Past (Part 3)

Posted 06-07-2009 at 09:23 PM by susa_24

-You don’t have to think Eron, you have to be certain, you can’t depend on your brains very much when you’re fighting hand to hand; trust your instincts.- The mage said. He was very, very serious about this, but suddenly he grinned and added: -Well, if I were you I definitely would not rely too much on my brains.-
-Okay, okay… I’m still the best at tracking though.- My mom handed Eron a glass of orange juice, which was is favorite and he gulped it down.
-Yes, yes… you’re still the best at tracking.- Per admitted.
-Okay, it’s getting cold Sheen, so you should go back inside.- Vin stood up and in a second stood me up and pushed me to the house.
-Nooo, please, please Vin just until the tourney’s over, pretty please?- I begged, but Vin would not stop shoving me towards the door.
-No, no Miss Sheena. You’re sick and you have to take care of yourself.- I sighed, she was right.
We walked inside and Vin made me go to bed, she would keep me company until she had to fight again. Once we were settled in my room, I gathered some courage and asked her about the dreams she had where she scream, and about her father.
-Well, you know I know how your body’s working, I know exactly when you’re hurt and everything, right?- I nodded. –Well, before I met you, I could feel everyone’s body. It was awful; I knew when people were sick, when they were going to die, everything. Just imagine having to live with that… I almost lost my mind several times, but there were people in the village that helped me through it.
But what really scarred me is that when I was ten, my father, who worked for the mines in the earth continent, took me with him to the mines, because I was always asking him about them.
There was an explosion on the surface, and the underground tunnels collapsed.- Vin paused for a second and breathed in to continue the story.
-In the mines, there are special shelters for the workers made to save them if the tunnel collapses, but the space is very small, made only for one person. He shoved me in and closed the hatch of the shelter. I couldn’t see him, but until today I can remember exactly how he died, after the tunnel had fallen apart completely, I came out and looked for him, I knew he was alive.
I moved rocks around until the last drop of blood left his fractured and shattered body, which was broken in so many awkward ways it was barely human anymore. I looked for him until night came and there, I fell asleep.
I was woken up by my father’s friends, who had found him just minutes ago, they carried my father’s body and me to my mother, who was very worried, but when she discovered that the thing the men were carrying was my father, she burst out crying, and my older sister too, I just sat there and unwillingly replayed my father’s slow and agonizing death in my head.
That event still haunts my dreams and thoughts, staining everything with the ripping pitch of my father’s scream of agony before the first rock cracked his ribs and perforated his left lung, making it painful for him to breathe, but still, he called out my name, knowing I could feel he was dying, he told me to stay inside until everything was over, he kept mumbling my name until his lungs gave out, until he no longer had the strength to move his lips. And I just sat there, safe and sound while my father suffered from an agonizing death…- She started sobbing, as two tears fell from her eyes.
I did not know what to do, so I just hugged her, and told her it was not her fault, just like Per had. Now everything fell into place, why she freaked out when I got hurt by rocks, why she was so mad at Per, why she got upset when the rock exploded. Now I felt bad for having put her through that.
-Now you know, I think that in order to know each other completely, we need to know our pasts, and this marked my life and made me who I am, so I do not regret telling you this. Maybe next time, you’ll tell me something I don’t know about you.- She smiled and wiped her tears.
-I’m terribly afraid of the darkness, but only when I’m alone, and I really, really hate riding horses.- I admitted, hoping that would make her feel better, and it did. She snickered, and then we both laughed.
-Vin, you’re up against Maple, Per will go and keep beasty company.- Eron announced from outside. Vin stood up and smirked.
-I’ll kick her butt for you okay?- She said, and then left.

Per came inside my room when I was about to fall asleep, he noticed and silently sat on the chair next to my bed and smiled.
-Get some sleep, sis.-
