Power, purely in the sense of ability, is defined by belief. Belief is founded by individuals' ideas combining together and forming strong opinions about something. Take government for example. Governments do not have the ability to control you, you simply act according to the rule of law because you believe that you should. This is supported by those who do not follow the rule of law because they do not believe the government to hold power over them. Governments are groups that offer positives for supporting them and following their rules, and negatives for disobeying them. However, the truth that applies to all animals in general is that if something neither hurts nor helps someone they grow to ignore it. Such as animals growing accustomed to humans and roaming about in city streets rather than fleeing at the very sign of human life. As intelligent creatures, we avoid things that are negative, and seek positive areas, and if government should fail, or we believe it to fail our expectations, the rule of law holds far less control over us. Power is in this way invisible, after all few are able to say they have interacted with deities, yet many believe that this is possible. This belief leads to swelling numbers engaging in the rituals, which applies power to those in charge of the organization, or the perhaps even the deity, regardless of whether or not it exists. While physical power is often taken as the only true and power over people, such as controlling materials necessary for life or threatening harm, this can also be shown to be quite powerless. One who is whipped too often grows accustomed to it or fails under the stress, (speaking in general terms), and the power behind the physical harassment grows weaker or insufficient, as harm cannot bring a hurt person up from the ground to do your bidding. In a realistic sense this kind of power is actually very successful given the right environment, and is quite common. However, if we were to view a society where physical harm and threats of death were tantamount to name-calling in our society, we would find the power behind physical means almost non-existent. It is of course, difficult to find societies in which one killing another and threatening to do the same again brings only laughter and little attention from the crowds.
