Women in Islam?

Hey guys and girls(or ladies, whatever) xD
Im having a project in Islam, and our topic is the difference between men and women, and how Islam is (both in theory and reality) towards women in the society.
I just wondered if anyone could help me a little with this, as I dont really know alot about it. I dont know what to believe either, because Ive heard ALOT.
Thanks for reading anyways, and I hope someone out there can give some feedback of some sort

Just to clear something up, women doesn't HAVE to wear a hijab. They do it because back in the days, only the royalty were allowed to wear it. Now they do it because they want to.
I think that you guys are thinking of a "burka". I dunno if it's called that in english, though.. xD
Anyways, men often force their wives to wear the "burka" to cover up their body so that no one else can see it. The men think of their wives body as their property, and they don't share.

Anyhow, you said that the hijab is pretty much something that isn't Islamically required while 99.9999999% of muslims do intrepert it as something IS islamically required.
