The story revolves around a girl, Chen Mei, from a village in China, on her wedding day she ran away leaving a letter to her to-be-husband whom she calls Tu dou ge. In the letter, Chen Mei said that she wants to pursue her own future and doesn't want to stay in the village throughout her life. Chen Mei goes to Shanghai.

She tries to find her senior, Wei Zheng Guo, someone whom she secretly admired. However, she found out that he is already with a model. After failing to get a job for many times, as well as finding out that her senior is attached, Chen Mei decided that she wants to change her appearance for the better.

At the same time, her good friend, Mei Ling is working at a magazine company. The company's manager, Min Qian comes out with a project, called Hou Tian Mei Nu. All he needs is to find someone that doesn't look attractive. Mei Ling asks Chen Mei to stay with her, and even told her that her company is looking for an editor. In the end, Chen Mei becomes an editor as she agreed to help Min Qian with the project. She realises that she is the chosen girl and realises that Min Qian is indirectly saying that she's ugly. Because of that, she often quarrel and clashes with Min Qian.

But, to become a Mei Nu(美女), Chen Mei has to do many things like going for spa, facial, gym,etc.
