Ok... here's where my "expertise" in oriental history and culture comes in - I have oriental ancestors, lived in China for years (because of work) and wrote a novel using chinese culture and history as theme...so, here I go explaining why it is considered a bon.

Ever wondered where the Japanese harakiri (ritual suicide) idea came from? I can tell you that it is not just the Japs who practiced ritual or honor suicide or killing. In many eastern and mid-eastern cultures, it used to be a norm. In these cultures, self and family honor is more important than your own life. Even until now, some small pockets of mid-eastern cultures that are predominantly Muslim still practice ritual or honour killing/suicide. Although tauted as a Muslim practice now, it has its root from eastern culture where honour is valued above all. There is a saying in chinese that is loosely translate to "Better to die in honour than to live in shame." Suffice to say, the majority Asians do not practice this anymore. Therefore, the act of helping a person keeps his or her honour is considered an honourable and kind act/ show of mercy.

13th was obviously my favorite personality. Since he was closest to modern thinking.

Romantic wise, 4th was my pick from the beginning. The first words out of my mouth when he first appeared on that horse were "He looks mean, I bet he'll be fun to mess with."

10th Prince was the most fun. You could always count on him for comedic relief, which was very necessarily scattered through out the show.

And those are my top three ... And I think they're the norm.

8th prince drove me nuts from the beginning his smile always made me feel like he needed to be punched in the nose. Though, I was surprised that I liked him at the end.

I would also add to that, the reason they had 13th brother give them the poison was because you could feel no hatred from him. He wasn't doing it out of spite. And he was the only person that could make it feel that way. Even when he threw that blood stained letter to 9th it was Rouxi's bitterness that reached the 9th prince not the 13th prince.

Had it been anyone else, I don't think we would have felt that merciful feeling it was meant to portray.

Aryael, I know about this honor suicides. They even existed in the Roman Empire. When some high official fell in disfavour he would be give some time to put an end himself. This was a chance for them to not be executed in shame.

As for the hounor killing by muslims. I`m also muslim and I live in a country in which this kind of murdering is done. It is pure murder for the sake of men`s pride and got nothing to do with being muslim. In the Islam is nothing that tells you to kill for example a girl that slept with the guy she loves. Contary if sth like that happens she should be married of to that guy.
Its some silly ritual men got themselves throughout the centuries and putting the fault on religion.

As for harakiri and the thing 13th did to hid brothers.
Yeah, somehow I can understand him, but still my brain says: No, you are tooo kind to do such a thing.

Clearly you have the brains when it comes to us. You always seem to teach me something new.

I feel the same way. If we were not separated at birth, we would not have this issue. LOL

Hello to all the ladies here
I've also finally watched this drama and I should say it was truely a great drama which still keeps me craving for more to see >_<
Concerning Akai's and Libby's discussion:
Spoiler
But wasn't it Rouxi's last will to the 13th prince to give other princes the poison? As I remember right there was a small mentioning and I thought he did it as her last wish in that letter she left to him.

And lol - 13th was my favourite
I even started a new drama with this actor but it doesn't give such a feeling as Startling with each step at all

Does anyone have any recommendations on some similar dramas to this one?? I just need more

It was part of her last wishes. Plus, you add in what Aryael said and it's a done deal.

I am glad you found this drama. It's SO GOOD! I wish I had another one like it but I think that is more up Aryael's aisle. Not that I have not been looking. If you bump into one write on my wall so I can watch along!
