The book describes the days leading up to the final try-outs, focusing on three MDC divers and changing perspective from chapter to chapter as it chronicles the boys’ everyday lives and the pressures they face as aspiring athletes. Mori’s affection for the three characters comes through in her portrayal of a mere moment―the 1.4 seconds in which they dive a distance of ten meters at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour―of their unique performances.
