Kishimoto does the same thing in the Naruto manga. Although I was lucky enough not to see the title until afterward, I'll never forget...

No need to kill off MCs to give a darker tone. (*is not a fan of death as cheap insta-angst/insta-conflict*) You can give someone a tragic backstory with lingering issues yet to be resolved, or torture them psychologically or something. though i'm not a big fan of yaoi and mashima probably didn't intend to make Freed the way most people interpret him, Freed's reactions to Laxus's every single action (no matter how little or unimportant) is something beyond that of admiration.
