you don't use a downward thrust , you use a low hook as you come into his chest to create a short hook, making an arch-punch little above the liver. The liver punch was originally created from a right hook.

downward-up thrust with an angle has a similarity between a uppercut and a liverblow , but a downward-up thrust isn't a liver punch, downward-up thrust with an angle is more of a angled uppercut with a little velocity.
