I walked quickly through the dark halls at school, trying to find my Chemistry book that I had left during the fire drill. As I combed the school, I found nothing. Right about the time, I was going to give up and go home I spotted a classroom with its lights on. I could feel my heart beat quicken as I stepped forward and grabbed the doorframe, leaning my head inside. A guy with his back to me was rummaging through his desk. He had black hair and looked around 6’2’’ or 6’3’’. I stepped forward and cleared my throat as the guy whirled around. His fiery red eyes scanned me over “Who are you?” I looked down “My name is Cassandra, Cassandra Libby.” He blinked a few times “Why are you here?” I looked back up, weary of the questions “I left my Chemistry book here so I came back to get it. Why are you here?” He looked around, not wanting to answer. His gaze found something and he walked over to the air vent, picking it up. He turned and held up my Chemistry book “Is this what you were looking for?” I nodded as he walked back over and handed me the book “I was here looking for one of my books as well.” My eyes narrowed “Really, which one?” He glanced around “Um, my Math book.”
“What’s your name and what year are you?” He sighed, “I’m a fourth year, and why do you want my name?” I quickly reigned in my attitude “I apologize, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], I didn’t realize.” He cocked his head “Are you a third year?” I nodded and cleared my throat “I’m really sorry.” He walked to his desk and pulled out a book “Cassandra, I’ll see you later.” He started walking out the door when I sighed, “You do know that’s not a Math book?” He stopped a few feet outside the door “No it’s not.”
“Well then, what is it?” He slightly turned his head, his eyes catching mine “Why would I tell you?!” I took an involuntary step backward, his voice sharp “No more questions.” He walked into the darkness, his presence lifting. I shook my head and made my way home.

The next day I wore a long sleeved shirt to cover the bruises. I sat with some acquaintances during lunch, waiting for the boring day to be over. Everyone was quiet as the Sempai walked through the cafeteria. I unconsciously glanced up, looking for the boy from last night. I heard some girls at my table gasp as I turned. The guy from last night was standing there, “You forgot this.” He handed me a piece of paper that had fallen out of my Chemistry book and went to catch up with his friends. Sandy, one of the girls at my table, whispered, “Do you have any idea who that Sempai was?” I shook my head, all the girls at the table leaned forward as Sandy continued, “That was Nicholas Reaper, one of the hottest guys in school. He’s also one of the most unapproachable men in the entire world.” I could feel my face redden as she spoke so I stood up and walked out to the bathroom.

As I was about to enter the bathroom I heard a voice say my name so I turned. My brother was standing there, looking cross “Where were you last night?” My heart raced “Dad took care of it.” My brother cocked his head, my father’s look in his eyes, I quickly asked “Dean, where is Scott or Jess?” Those were the only boy’s that could stop this, Dean answered slowly “Scott’s sick and Jess is eating lunch.” Jess, Dean’s twin brother, was the nicer of the two. I breathed in slowly “I’ve got to go to the bathroom.” I turned and he grabbed my arm, Jess’s voice wrung out “Dean, enough!” My arm was let go as Jess took another step forward “How am I going to break you of dad’s spell, Dean?” Dean growled and walked back into the cafeteria; Jess nodded to me and followed Dean. I sank down to the floor, tears streaming down my face. A voice startled me “What’s wrong?” I quickly wiped my face and looked up into Nicholas’s face. I jumped up “Nothing, I’m fine!” I had not meant for it to sound so ruff but Nickolas just cocked his head “Hard to believe.”
“What?”
“That you are who you are.”
“Who am I?” He sighed, “Meet me at the coffee house on 9 after school.” He was gone, just disappeared into thin air. Jess stuck his head back out the door “By the way, sorry I wasn’t home last night.”
“I lived.” His face fell “Call me before you do something like that again.” I nodded and he dunked back into the cafeteria

Right after school, I headed to the coffee house. Nicholas was already waiting at a table in the back. He looked up and motioned me over “I’ve got one question first.” I sat down and swallowed “Yes?”
“Why are you still living with your father?” I stood up and walked back out the door.

A few minutes later, I felt Nicholas’s hand on my shoulder “Stop.” My entire body stiffened “Get your hand off me!” He let go as a voice sounded from behind us “You talked to her? Come on Nick.” Nickolas sighed, “Jake – Cassandra – Cassandra – Jake.” I nodded at Jake and continued walking. Jake stepped in front of me “We aren’t trying to be aggressive but we need to talk with you.” I stopped “Why? Why do you need to talk to me?” Jake glanced at Nick then continued, “This may sound weird but remember the book you saw Nick get out of his desk last night?” I nodded “His “Math” book?” Jake sighed, “Could you really see it?” I nodded again as Jake continued, “Normal people can’t see that book.” My eyes widened as he continued, “That book was given to Nick by his father, to teach him now to do his job.” I cocked my head “I guess my next question should be “What job?” but I’m not going to ask that. I’m going to ask: Who’s your father?” They shared a look, not expecting that question. Nickolas answered, “His first name is Grim, and I’ll let you put the rest together.” I thought for a second. If Nick’s last name is Reaper and his dad’s first name is Grim. Grim Reaper! They smiled as my expression changed “Your dad’s the Grim Reaper?!” Nickolas nodded “That’s why you shouldn’t have been able to see my book.”
“What do you want with me then?”
“My dad wants to meet you.” I nodded “Well let’s meet the Grim Reaper.” Jake stood by Nickolas, putting his hand on his shoulder. Nickolas cleared his throat “I have to be touching you for you to come into my house.” I stepped closer and grabbed his arm, he closed his eyes, and we left the sidewalk.

Before I knew what was going on we were standing in a living room, I let go of Nickolas’s arm and looked around “This is your house?” The room was 30 feet high and 50 feet wide. Jake smirked “Yeah, he forgot to mention that he lived in a castle between dimensions, didn’t he?” I nodded as another voice entered the room; it was deep and commanded attention “Is this the girl?” Both the boys nodded as a 6’5’’, dark haired, blue-eyed man stepped inside the room. He walked over to me and stuck his hand out for me to shake “Hi, I’m Grim.” I reached out my hand and shook his “Nice to meet you Grim, I’m Cassandra or Cassie for short.” A woman entered the room; she had long blond hair, and red eyes. Grim turned toward the woman “Rai this is Cassandra, Cassandra this is my wife Rai.” Rai nodded and walked over to Nickolas. Grim spoke again “Would it be too much to ask for your last name?”
“It’s Libby, why?”
“I’m trying to figure out how you could’ve seen Nick’s book.”
“Honestly, I’ve got no idea.” All of the sudden the entire room started shaking and Rai turned “I thought we had more time!” Grim turned toward the wall, a cape appearing around his neck “Nick, I’ve told you who she is and when to tell her who she is right?” Nickolas nodded as a scythe appeared in Grim’s hand. Nickolas grabbed my arm, pulling me into his chest “Is it the Erana?” Grim nodded as Jake took hold of Nickolas’s shoulder “They are going to overrun our house. Your mother and I will meet you at Jake’s house.” Nickolas nodded and we disappeared.

Nick slowly stepped back from me and glanced at Jake “How long till your parents get home?”
“Probably two hours or so.” Nick thought for a second “Call them and tell them what’s going on.” He nodded and pulled out his cell phone, walking into the other room. Nickolas plopped down on the couch “This is not how I thought my day would go.” I sat down next to him, “And what is a normal day for you?” He sighed “The Erana have never gotten this far before. My dad must be pissed.”
“Who are the Erana?”
“Good question. The Erana are out enemies. They try to disrupt the balance of things.”
“You mean they try and stop you from taking peoples souls?” He cringed “People think that’s all we do when in reality it’s something a little different.” I glanced around “Apparently we’ve got some time so explain.”
“We guide souls into the waiting room.”
“Waiting room?”
“The place where people are separated, they go to either heaven or hell. We reapers do not know where they belong so we take them to the waiting room. Understand?” I nodded “Yeah. Are you like the Reaper-in-Training?” He smirked “Sort of, I’ve got an older brother but he is kind of out of the equation.”
“Can I ask why?” He sighed, contemplating his next words “I’ll tell you this much, he disobeyed my father’s explicit orders.” Jake came back into the room, and closing his phone he spoke “They are glad to help the current reigning Reapers.” Jake sat in a rocking chair, next to Nick, and sighed.
