Eureka Seven. i started late, it was on adult swim and introduced me to Bleach, and well things went from there.
sidenote...no cable as a kid. and i stayed watching sports or playing them, but i have to say i am glad i never got into pokemon saved me a shitload of money over my childhood. |

Hardly anime, but Final Fantasy (both Spirits Within and Advent Children) were pretty good on my list of movies. I think at the time, I just liked the realism of their CG compared with typical Dreamworks/Pixar CG.
As far as "actual" anime, I think the first one I really ever liked was one of the .hack ("dot hack") series, which I just kind of stumbled upon (without using the website by the same name).
