I was really young when i saw this, so i dont expect anyone to figure out what anime i am talking about. Dont remember much but here i go! I think the main char was a guy with red hair and he uses a katana as a weapon

He is wearing something like the black kimono thingy they wear in Bleach. There is also a girl (short) that is with him but is weaker than him so he has to protect her. Dont remember the setting but what i remember is that they are standing in the forest and you can see the sunset in the background.

haha... it's usually easier to recognize than you think. Many of these are animes that have aired in the US. I grew up on all of these.
