I tried the first episode...I'm not interested in it either because of the art style. That part of history is fascinating to me, since it's a reminder of just how long the Chinese culture has lasted, but I'm not going to suffer through that much terrible art.

Not so much. The designs aren't that different but so far, Hyouka has been a hit and miss series. It can be excellent like it did with Sekitani Jun's mystery but mostly, their mystery can be easily dealt with disbelief or something practical. In the last mystery about the movie script, I can easily give an onset and throw a 'why don't you just give the scriptwriter a call or whatever, it's not like she is dead anyway' rebuttal to satisfy my disbelief. In the end, Hyouka is still lingering on the mystery created for the sake of mystery.

Just some random thoughts and recommendation here. I thought the Towa no Quon movies(6 of them) were really good and you guys should probably take a look at it.
