Vi3t on the later where your render is , use Filter->others->HighPass and adjust .

pretty good for your first one : D

just some tips i could give you right now since your just starting.

learn the filters they help you alot with cool effects.
Try messing around with photo filters and gradient maps they make a good sig better.
Learn ALL the tools it helps alot!
and read some tuts and download some psd packs. Some tuts are harder than others. id say start with the easy ones until you learn all the tools then go into the more advanced ones. just remember tuts arent supposed to be followd exactly like how it shows so its okay if you get something differnt than the creator of the tut

these are the very basics i wish i could go more in depth but im not good at explaning things Dx

also depends if your using photoshop or gimp?

do you still have the layers seperate... like bg and fg not on the same layer.....

cause then I could suggest trying out the glas filter.... wind filter or some of the other filters, mess around with the settings.... if you only wanna use what you have in the background now....

you cold also otherwise add some layers with details, just add in stocks or something, and mess around with that... or try out smudge...

Not sure if you even know where to find all those tools... if not, let me know... then I wil go a little more indept on where to find those....

another thing I would suggest:
Add a lightsource... and you could add some colours with just some soft brushing on a new layer... some minor details like dots with 1 pixel brush and with blending options adding outer glow can also add minor details to make it look a little more interesting....
Add some gradients like was said before... with adjustment layers you can add those and levels can also help.....
