Whenever I watch a J-drama that is based on a manga or anime, I always compare the two. Unfortunately, I often find the drama enjoyable, but I am not completely satisfied. The only one I can remember leaving me satisfied was Gokusen-Season 1. Does anyone else have this feeling? Any dramas that you felt lived up to or surpassed the manga or anime?

I think for me they're easy for me to enjoy since most I haven no idea that the drama I'm watching is based of an anime or manga or I just haven't seen the anime yet so I go in watching it without expectations and I enjoy the drama. Of course sometimes this is also a problem because then I may go back to read the manga or watch the anime and be disappointed that certain things didn't make the actual drama...Gokusen would be a perfect example of that. Spoiler As for the dramas I did know where based on mangas/animes that I've seen I basically loved them. Again there were maybe certain things that I was sad didn't make the show but overall though I was satisfied.

I don't compare that much. It's to be expected that things will be changed. So rather than being disappointed when they leave things out (which they will do a lot) I'm just happy when I realize they adapt something exactly from the manga. <3 Like the thunderstorm scene in OHSHC. <3 Or the scene with Makita in Hana-Kimi 2011. So yeah, I just don't expect them to do adapt things 1:1 from a manga and try to be open for something new. Though it would be different with my favorites. |

Basically the same with Nana...although if something doesn't get adapted then yeah it sucks but overall I'm happy with how it comes out. I think one of the things that upsets me is when people criticize the actors for the roles. I mean everyone has the vision of how characters should be, I know I do but just because we have our own vision of characters doesn't mean we should bring down actors just cuz their interpretation may not have fit what we envisioned. After all they take on the roles to give the characters justice.

Hm for me i tend to love watching dramas which have been adapted from animes. But then i find myself frustrated because either bit's were not explained or messed around with. Some of the ones i loved both in anime form and drama were the following. Gokusen - I felt both the anime version and drama one brought different thing's to the story and with the drama i adored shin and yakumi more so than any other characters. Do not get me wrong i loved them in the anime but the chemistry in the movie was so much better and being a Jun Matsumoto fan it really suited my needs. Plus as i am always a KATTUN fan the next series was a instant hit for me! OHSHC - When i saw this anime i fell in love with it completely and when i saw it was being made into a drama i died a little inside. But then i had the concern over if it would be done correctly as it could be ruined in so many ways. There was so many thing's in the anime i loved and was so pleased when i saw they had gone and added it. It still lacked a little bit but when it has come from animation to live action you have to expect some changes. Hana Yori Dango - i loved both forms and was pulled more with the drama because again i am a Jun Matsumoto but also Oguri Shun & Inoue Mao were in it as well and i love both those people so it really was a huge win win. Liked i saw above when it is converted from animation to live action there never truely going to be able to make everyone happy and not everything can be added in. I find that it can be a good thing when there doing a drama as stuff they could not do in the anime can be added and that develops the story. You have to be open minded and expect it to have those characters and relationships you love but with different faces and different situations. Remember its a old story but a new turn of events.

I usually like J-dramas based on Mangas or Animes, such as the new drama called Sprout, or Hana Yori Dango. Those were extremely well adapted. There are a few that I would prefer the manga over the drama because the actors either overact the role or underact and leave me wanting more. The drama that I absolutely loved based on an anime was a Taiwanese drama called It Started with a Kiss, based on the japanese anime and manga called, Itazura Na Kiss. Beautifully adapted. ![]() There are some drama's however that just ruin what the anime stands for, like the live action show of Sailor Moon...it's just ridiculous in my opinion. |

One of my favourite manga and drama adaptation is Holyland, I much prefer the Japanese version to the Korean. As for the latter, the actors they chose and the roles felt too old for what they were meant to be, not to mention the lead wasn't that good. With the Japanese version, I love the cinematography and the cast, my only qualm is they ended it too soon, it ended just before things got really really good in the manga, but at the same time, it was a good place to stop, if they'd done any more then they wouldn't have done it justice. Another good manga turned drama is Bloody Monday, the first season was awesome, no real bad thing to say about it, yes some of the plot was different but you expect that, well at least I do to some extent. However with the second season they completely broke away from the manga, by itself the second season was really good. But it didn't feel much like the second series of the manga. That said I seriously hope they make an adaptation of the third and final manga series. ... There's probably more but I can't think of them right now. | |

This is what happened to me with the Harry Potters and their film counterparts. That is to say, I just kind of decided to let each kind of become its own entity in my mind, so that I couldn't be disappointed even if disconnect were to occur. |

I'm very skeptic about them, but I end up liking them. Anyway, if someone reliable tells me the drama sucks, I'm not prone to watch it (never watched OHSHC because a friend recommended me not to do it). I'm a huge fan of Sailormoon, so when PGSM came out, even though it was so different, I watched it complete. I actually got very fond of the "terminator" Sailormoon, willing to destroy the world and invoking Endymion... |
