KBS’s new Monday-Tuesday drama God of Study, which features a young cast of underperforming students at a last-place high school, has released its official promos. Featured are Kim Su-ro and Bae Doo-na playing teachers, while the five motley youngsters who join in a special college-prep class are, from left to right in the above poster, Lee Chan-ho, Ji-yeon, Yoo Seung-ho, Go Ah-sung, and Lee Hyun-woo.

The drama is based on Japanese series Dragon Zakura and kicks off on January 4, which is a competitive night — a grand total of four kdramas will be premiering their first episodes then, three of them simultaneously. First is SBS’s Pick the Stars, then following in the usual 10pm prime-time hour will be Jejoongwon (SBS), God of Study (KBS), and Pasta (MBC).

THE CAST OF GOD OF STUDY

The story kicks off when a teacher begins a university prep course with five underperforming students at a high school that is in last place in the academic standings. Leading the group of five students is Yoo Seung-ho as a stubborn and rebellious troublemaker. The group is rounded out by (in order of the cast photo above) Lee Chan-ho, Ji-yeon, Go Ah-sung, and Lee Hyun-woo.


That’s a pretty solid young cast, not to mention the older generation featuring Bae Doo-na and Kim Su-ro.

In addition to Yoo Seung-ho’s troublemaker, we have:

Go Ah-sung, 17. She was tagged as an up-and-comer to watch in the horror film The Host, and also had roles in Happy Life and Radio Days. Her character is a sincere and honest type who lacks perseverance.

Lee Hyun-woo has great charm and comic delivery, and at 16 years old, he has already had roles in numerous dramas like Queen Seon-deok, Return of Iljimae (he was Cha-dol), Great King Sejong, Lobbyist, and Legend. His character dreams of being an idol singer.

Meanwhile, Ji-yeon, 16, is probably most known for being in girl group T-ara, but she was also featured in horror drama Hon (Soul) earlier this year and did, I thought, a pretty good job; she seems to have a good affinity for the camera. Her character is peaceful and easygoing, though she lacks a sense of purpose.

Lee Chan-ho, 20, is the eldest of the bunch and appeared with Yoo Seung-ho, 16, in Fourth Period Murder Mystery, as well as the teen comedy film Our High School E.T.. His character is a timid type who doesn’t assert himself.

God of Study will air on KBS Mondays and Tuesdays. Perhaps hoping to recreate Boys Before Flowers’s youth appeal, it premieres almost exactly one year after it, on January 04.

The Charismatic Yoo Seung Ho

Here’s our first look at Yoo Seung-ho in character for KBS’s upcoming God of Study [공부의 신], which is an adaptation of the Japanese series Dragon Zakura.

Yoo Seung-ho’s character is tough guy Hwang Baek-hyun, trading his noona-magnet gentle image for a more rough and masculine one. (Something tells me the noona-magnetism will remain intact.) Baek-hyun grew up under the care of his grandmother after both parents died and is something of a troublemaker. He’s stubborn and prideful, and in his last year of high school.

God of Study had been planned for production 2009 but had stalled, and was then revived. It takes place at a third-rate high school attended by lackluster students. In the original, Abe Hiroshi played a lawyer who takes a teaching position and leads a special prep class to gain students entry to a university. God of Study focuses on the special class of five students, and follows them as they mature and improve their lives while studying.

Yoo’s management stated, “In shedding his bright, younger-than-his-age image, Yoo Seung-ho has decided to change his appearance to be more masculine.” To achieve that, his character wears vintage-style clothing (like leather jackets) and sports a new hairstyle.

The drama premieres on January 4. It’ll air against SBS’s Jejoongwon and MBC’s Pasta.

Sneak Peek at God of Study

Yoo Seung Ho and T-ara's Jiyeon are already causing much buzz amongst netizens from pictures of the two on the film set.

The two have been selected as the main leads for the new KBS drama, God of Study which is a remake of Japan's Dragon Zakura. The filming site is located at a school, so the actors in this drama stood out more to the public.

Netizens have been putting up pictures of the filming and have reported, "'God of Study' is already in the works," and "They really stand out when you see them on the filming site."

A picture of Jiyeon smiling has also garnered in much interests and netizens have commented, "This picture is overflowed with Jiyeon's friendliness," and "I'm already looking forward to 'God of Study.'"

About a year ago, a remake of the Japanese drama series Dragon Zakura was being prepared to be broadcast on SBS with Park Ye Jin, Lee Hong Ki, Oh Ji Ho, etc confirmed for Korean version titled Lord of Study. Production difficulties however curtailed the production which had been hastily assembled in the first place.

But it looks like the remake will finally happen.

Production company, Drama House who last produced Painter of the Wind, announced on the 19th that they would be producing the Korean version of Dragon Zakura and that will be aired over KBS2TV in early 2010.

The story is adapted from the similarly titled Japanese manga and is about a group of students in one of the worst schools in Japan, and their challenge to get into a top university. The manga and drama adaptation has not only seen good results in reader and viewership, it has also boosted the number of Tokyo University applications by 12%.



The Korea version is expected to take a similar route as the Japanese version and will reveal to viewers the faults that lie with the Korean education system these days and their ideal education system. The drama title has not been decided yet.

Kim Suro will reprise the role of teacher Kang Suk Ho (Sakuragi Keniji), a a poor lawyer and former gang member and was played by Abe Hiroshi in the Japanese version. Yoo Seung Ho meanwhile will get the rebellious student role of Hwang Baekhyun (Yajima Yuusuke).

Auditions are currently being held for the other roles and filming will begin once everything is finalized. If everything goes according to plan, it will premiere on 4th January, 2010, replacing Invincible Lee Pyung Kang in the Mon-Tue timeslot.
