It was another loaded day for October. She was coming down the staircase of the Nursing Department and was hurrying for an NSTP meeting all the way to the fifth floor of the Old Building. The Snow Queen, as the UL populace called her, was having a very bad day. She couldn’t wait to get home.

As she went pass the many people at the ground floor facing the open gym and looking occasionally at her watch, October failed to notice the person who shouted “LOOK OUT!” It was too late for her to avoid the ball that knocked off the books she was carrying. She quickly regained her composure and started picking up her things. Just then, one of the players approached her.

“Sorry about that. Let me help you.” said the six foot tall boy with sweat dripping from his spiked hair, his handsome face and toned arms. He stoops down and helps October.
As they both stood up, the boy asks her if she got hurt anywhere but was cut off mid-sentence when he saw October’s sapphire blue eyes. When she noticed his astonishment, she quickly says “Thank you and it’s their natural color.” The boy caught off-guard, replies “I’m Jerold by the way.”
“Nice meeting you.” October replied timidly. She then turns around and went straight to the old building, unbeknownst to Jerold’s eyes following her until she disappeared in the crowd.

“YOU WHAT? October, don’t tell me you’ve forgotten what our mission is?” said Deanne in almost a scream.
It was the day after October’s fateful encounter at the open court. She sighed as she replied “It was just a ridiculous notion you, Valerie, Beatrice and I made a year ago. I can’t believe you still remember.”

It was then that Valerie spoke after staring at October wide-eyed for a while. “Of course we remember. We promised to have at least a suitor or a boyfriend basketball player before we reach the third year. And it’s Francis we’re talking about here. The most hard-to-get and most gorgeous varsity player there is. He asked you out, girl! And you turned him down!”

“If only he had a brain to go with that hot body of his. I might have had second thoughts.” October muttered sarcastically. “Look, I feel guilty okay. I hurt the guy’s feelings. But the truth is I have no interest in him.”

“Fine, but don’t you go crying when he asks me out.” Valerie blurts out.
Deanne and October replies in unison, “Yeah, right.” And together they laughed aloud as they walked down the hall way.
Suddenly October stops. “Shoot! I forgot my files at the extension office. You girls go ahead. I’ll see you tomorrow.” She kisses them on the cheek goodbye and hurries up to the Extension Services office.

When October finally came down, it was almost pitch black at the end of the hall way. To her surprise was the tall and handsome Jerold Petrola, the Ace Player, sitting at a bench near the stairs. He greeted her with a wide smile and “It’s kind of late for you to still be here.”
October greets him with “Same to you.”

“Well, I practically live here. It’s dark. Why don’t I escort you to the gate.” His voice sounded concerned.
October, taken over by her fear of the dark, agreed. As they walked together, Jerold apologizes again for yesterday. But throughout that walk, October was quiet. She never even realized they were already at the gate.
“So, will you be okay here?” Jerold asks her.
“I live nearby so I’ll be fine from here. Thank you.” She was wondering why it was hard for her let out those words.

“No problem.” It was with those two words that their friendship started; a very deep friendship.

The two of them later found out how much they had in common. There wasn’t a day that they wouldn’t talk even for a short while. Jerold would always accompany her home if she stayed late in campus. October has never been comfortable with any other boy with the exception of Jerold.

She opened how her American father left her mother long ago and that she only knew him by picture. She has to study hard and maintain a scholarship to help her mother out.
Jerold then opened how he was recruited into the team and was given the opportunity to study for free and that one day he wants to play in the NBA. They were the best of friends and they believed that was all there is.

The two of them always denied to their other friends and the other varsity players that there was anything else other than friendship between them. Even if Deanne, Beatrice and Valerie always teased October that her mission was almost complete, she insisted that she and Jerold were just good friends and congratulated Valerie when her wish that Francis ask her out finally came true.

Jerold and October would be so surprised if they found out how much they think alike. Because as time passed by they slowly fell in love with one another. Jerold never knew the reason, but he missed October badly during her affiliation, even if he receives text messages from her everyday or if they talk on the phone. He was even scolded by the Coach when he lost focus in one of their games.
He never knew that October felt the same and he was ecstatic when she came home.

Yet, Jerold and October decided to keep it to themselves. Even if it was painful, they both thought it would be better that way for the sake of their friendship. Then the day came that Jerold’s dream finally came true. He never told October. She had to find out from Marvin, the MVP of the team. By then, it was two days before he left for the United States and that day Jerold was going to leave for Manila.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” October confronted Jerold with teary eyes.
“It’s because I don’t want to see my best friend crying over a guy like me.” Jerold tells her as he wiped her tears dry.
Still crying, October said “I won’t cry if you told me earlier.”

“You will behind my back.” As he said those, Jerold hugged October tight.
As she flooded his shirt with tears, October said with heavy heart “I don’t expect you to stay in contact with me but do your best, okay. Never forget that I’ll always be your biggest fan.”
Jerold then softly utters something he knew was so true, “I will never forget you.” He then caresses her face and gave October a warm sweet kiss.

His parting words were “That’s my remembrance from you.”
They exchanged one long look with one another before Jerold boarded the car and left. October, from all her crying, never saw the sparkle in his eyes. That look which told how much he truly loved her – as more than just a friend.

Eight years later, October became a successful nurse in America. She worked in a first class hospital in California. One of her favorite patients was a certain 75 year-old Filipina, named Grandma Lucy, who was recovering from an operation. Grandma Lucy often told her that she was her favorite nurse, especially because she likes to see October’s blue eyes every day. The old woman would also tell October about her grandson whom she loved very much.

“Hija, you remind me so much of my apo. You have the same energy. He always tells me about this best friend he used to have. Oh! I miss him so much.” The grandmother told October one day.
She cheerily replied, “I have to do my best then so that you’ll recover quickly and see your grandson soon.”

The next day, as October went to check up on Grandma Lucy, her words of greeting almost choked her because of shock. She almost dropped her clip-board. The man she hasn’t seen in eight years was right in front of her, sitting beside the bed of her patient.
As she entered the room, the tall man stood up and bid farewell to his grandmother. “I’ll see you again soon, Lola. I’ll come back when I’m free again.” He then turned to her and said “Thank you for taking care of Lola.” He then left with a cool aloofness in his steps. Jerold Petrola, the star basketball player, her best friend, her first love, did not recognize her.

“That was my grandson, Jerold.” Grandma Lucy finally said. October regained composure and started checking her patient’s blood pressure. As she did, October commented “You never told me you had a very famous apo.”
Grandma Lucy raised her shoulders with “Well, whenever I tell people that, they think I’m senile.”

“Well, I think his visit did you some good.” October tells her. “I’ll come back later for your medication. Please rest well.” She leaves quickly and goes to the bathroom to cry her eyes out.

October didn’t know what to feel – happiness or misery? She never had the time to watch television to see Jerold. But she has heard a lot about him from friends.
After he left the Philippines, October kept busy to forget, but she never did, she never could forget. And when she left the country to work in the States, she knew there was little chance for the two of them to meet and if they ever did, she did not expect for him to recognize her. Jerold was a world celebrity now. There’s no way he'd know someone like her. She did know one thing: she still loves him.

When October got out of the bathroom, the other nurses were still talking about the famous athlete who just visited the hospital. A fellow Filipina nurse approached her and asked if she was okay. She only said that she was tired which was half-true.

A week later, during her day off, October stayed at her apartment, sat on her sofa and turned on(take out either this 'on') the television on(or this 'on') to The Filipino Channel. She watched the news until the interview with star athlete Jerold Petrola came into play.
October increased the volume as the reporter asked the athlete how he feels now that he has been chosen to play in the USA Olympics Basketball team. As Jerold answered, October listened carefully.

Jerold was then asked if there was anyone he wanted to thank for his success. He answered, staring directly into the camera, “I want to thank my coach and the whole team, my family especially my Lola Lucy for supporting me all the way.”
He then hesitates a while before he continued. “There is another person I would like to thank. She was my inspiration even before I came to the States. She’s the reason I do my best in every game. I haven’t seen her for eight years and when I finally do, I didn’t even recognize her. I soon realized how stupid I was and remembered the moment I held the ball during practice…” there was laughter in the background.

October could not believe what she was watching. It was the news for goodness’ sake. Her hand covered her mouth as tears welled up in her eyes. Memories that were so clear like they were only made yesterday flooded her thoughts.

“October, if you’re watching, I want you to know how sorry I am for not being able to see you again. Back then, eight years ago, I loved you so much. I loved you more with each thought of you. When I saw you again I knew I still loved you. I would give you the world just to see you everyday. I want you to know since you came into my life, every day, every night you give light to my heart…”

She couldn’t take it anymore so she turned off the television. She cried like she cried the day he left. She regretted so much how she never told him how she felt that day eight years ago. It was so painful and yet there was that speckle of happiness in her heart. When her tears started to die down, her doorbell rang. She wiped her face dry and fixed herself before opening the door.
Slowly she walked towards her wooden panel door, removed the lock and with hands still shaking she opened it. The sight at her door almost made her faint.

“You’re even more beautiful than when we first met.” Was Jerold’s greeting.
“H-how did you find me?” Was all October could muster out.
“I asked the staff at the hospital. I guess you’ve already watched the news. Everything I said was true and I know I’m such a jerk for not telling you face to face but I was afraid you’d think I’m crazy and run away but I did get the courage to finally talk to you.” With what he said, tears started flowing from October’s eyes again.

“I told you I didn’t want to see you cry because of me.” He then held her in his arms tightly; tighter than that day he left her. He promised he would never leave her again.
“You idiot. I would never cry again because of you.” It was all October could muster out.
“You will behind my back.” He softly held her face like before and said “I never did forget you.”

“So did I.” October mutters before Jerold kissed her with a kiss she knew was sweeter and stronger than the kiss he gave her that day eight years ago; kiss that was like their love for each other. It was the love they kept to themselves and nurtured all these years – strong, warm and sweet...

Discussing books and stories that are already published. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it, just that this seems a bit too personal for a regular thread.

This is a place for people to post their own work as well as discuss published work. A blog is basically a personal public journal, I don't feel literature really belongs in them.
stephkirstin and ZonieCatz like this.

This section was made so people could publish their poems, stories and fanfiction, that is why people asked for it, the whole section, there is a thread called which book did you read last. You could start a thread about published books of some kind for a more indepth discussion if you have a topic.

Ok just adding my 2 cents carry one

you should check the directory and see other works from other users. the library section was made to make it easier for users who write too. plus this is more practical for us since a single thread can contain all your works. a disadvantage from the blog which has a text limit. :'D
