This is my first fanfic for this forum and I thought I'd post this fanfic I thought about involving the characters of Gallery Fake. This will be in Five Parts and God Willing, I'll be able to post updates at a regular basis. The idea for this came to me while I was watching Episode 2 of Gallery Fake -The Phantom Sunflowers. Please post any notes, comments, corrections and criticisms. I do not and will never claim to have a 100% knowledge on the characters of GF, Its just a story I got an idea for on the fly. Enjoy! Gallery Fake: The First Secretary By Papermaster (Dino Virgilio G. Monzon III) Chapter 1: A New Start NB: This prologue takes place after the flashback events seen in Episode 2 of Gallery Fake titled: The Phantom Sunflowers. Reiji Fujita, former Curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and owner of Gallery Fake sat on the sofa in the reception area of his gallery and finished his cigarette, his 3rd of the day, as he mused about the recent battle of wits he had with Sayoko Mitamura, the young and elegantly beautiful (in his eyes, anyway) Director of the Takeda Art Museum. Securing that copy of Cezannes' Phantom Sunflowers had been a challenge. It cost him a week's work,a night's sleep as well as calling in a marker from an old friend. But it had been worth it to make the Princess Sara Halifa happy and to retrieve back for her her cherished favorite painting. "I wonder where she is now?" he asked himself suddenly. He rarely thought after his clients of the Gallery Fake (not counting those in his list of established regulars; a list he zealously guarded) Still. he couldn't help it. Sara was a rather lovely young girl with a gentle disposition, though he sensed she could be spirited and feisty if she was provoked. And he couldn't helped but be touched when she had implored his help in getting her painting back. He chuckled. He was hoping she'd return. The check she gave him as payment was considerable; in fact, it was a touch more than even expected as payment. As good as the money was, it was too much. Perhaps he should contact the Kerabian Embassy and... The light sound of the chime at the gallery door alerted the Professor (his nickname at the MET for his wide ranging knowledge on a wide variety of subjects, and not all exclusive only to art) and self consciously he got up to straighten his attire: a light blue suit with red pinstripe tie. If its a costumer, or a new client, he should, after all , look his best. He stood to his five-ten height and absently ran a hand through his well coiffed short blue black hair. "Mr. Fujita?" There was no mistaking the musical-lilted voice. Reiji smiled as Sara Halifa came inside the main room. "Good day, Princess." Reiji said, "I must say I'm surprised to see you. I thought you were already back at your homeland by now. I hope everything's all right and that the Phantom Sunflowers is safe." "Good Morning, Mr. Fujita." Sara Halifa was a petite lovely young woman -perhaps no more than 5'6"- with chestnut brown hair that came to just past her shoulders. Slim built, her oval face was highlighted by her large deep blue eyes with her very light cafe au lait complexion hinting at her Arab descent. Attired in a black hijab, the traditional head veil for muslim women, that covered a white blouse and khaki pants and sandals that showcased a rather nice figure. " I hope nothing's wrong', Reiji said as he saw her come over to him. "Oh, everything's fine. The Phantom Sunflowers is at my hotel room. I just wanted to thank you again. You were very kind and helpful to me." " I'm happy to be of assistance. I was hoping you'd come back." He reached into his back trouser pocket to get his wallet. "You paid me too much." He took out a sheaf of bills totaling 2 million Yen. " Here." Sara's eyes widened in surprise. "Please, that's not necessary. Its only right that I pay you for your services. You did spend a week working hard to get the painting back for me..." "All the same. One musn't ask too much; neither should one give too much. " Reiji smiled. " A very good lady friend of mine who runs a shop told me that." He wondered how Ms. Ichihara would feel knowing he applied an axiom she usually cites for the customers who are drawn to her shop. "T-thank you." Sara accepted the money. I'm glad to know you're an honest man. Actually, I'm glad to have caught you here at the gallery. I-I was hoping to ask a new favor of sorts." "What do you have in mind?" Fujita asked, curiously. Sara paused for a few moments, hesitating. Then:"I'd like to work for you here at Gallery Fake." "W-what?" Reiji was surprised and made no effort to conceal it. "You want to work here? Why? You're a Princess, Sara..." Sara shook her head. A look of sadness came to her eyes. "Please... that title's useless to me now. True the Americans, British and Russians liberated my country...but without my family, I've no real reason to continue to stay there now. My uncle's agreed to rule as Regent until I'm 30. Maybe by then I'll be able to come back to Kerabia. " Sara's father was the King of Kerabia. A wise and well loved ruler, he was very well regarded, not only by the Arab League, but also the international community because he was more open (not TOLERANT) of Western traditions and to their people. So when that annoying self proclaimed tyrant (and would be new Ayatollah) to the north started an unprovoked war that killed the royal family of Kerabia (excepting Sara who barely escaped with her life from the palace) , the United Nations quickly responded by sending in a coalition led by the United States that rapidly liberated the Kingdom. Even Red China didn't object.Staunch Marxist-Leninnists they may be, even they weren't crazy about that madman to the north in potential control of 8% of the world's oil. Liberating Kerabia took less than 2 months. At the end of the expedition, while a search was made for survivors of the ruling family (Sara had since come to Tokyo then) , the King's Uncle was installed as Regent. Sara had been since found to have survived and she was asked to go back to Kerabia where she had a talk with her uncle on the disposition of the rule of the Kingdom. "But for now," Sara continued. "Something tells me my place is here in Japan. Call it fate, kismet, destiny...but my heart says I should stay here for now." Reiji smiled slightly. One thing he liked about Sara is that , at heart, she was a romantic. Still..."You say you'd like to work here at Gallery Fake. In what capacity? I certainly can't take you as a maid...your uncle would have my head over his bed before sunrise the next day if I did that." "Well, Sara said lightly, " Why not take me in as your secretary? I noticed you're alone here. You've no assistant. Nobody to look after the place or look after you. What if you get sick? Or something comes up and you can't leave the gallery unattended?" She blushed lightly. "Actually, I wouldn't mind being your housekeeper if you want me to be. I'm nobody special anymore. And you needn't pay me a salary..." Reiji smiled at that. Thinking it over, he could use an assistant. An Aide de camp of sorts at Gallery Fake. Still he couldn't have the Princess work for gratis. It wouldn't be fair. And there are some things she had to learn first as well. "No. That would be unacceptable." Reiji said. "Look, if you want to be my secretary...tell you what, Princess. I agree: But you must abide by these conditions" "Yes?" "I will pay you for your work. I will not see you work for free. Don't worry. It will be a fair salary. "I will have you attend a short secretarial course. It will run for 3 months. And I will ask a colleague of mine who teaches at the University to tutor you so you will have some knowledge of art; it is the gallery's business, after all. "You will only work for me 4 days a week. I realize that Friday is the day of rest for you. And I want you to have time to relax properly. I may call you in during a Saturday, but never on Fridays. The Gallery is close on Sundays, anyway. "I may ask you to accompany me on my trips here and abroad. " He paused to smile at her. "Don't worry, Princess. I won't put you on display. Its just that there are times I will need advice and opinion. I don't know everything. "And, one last thing...I can be pushy and demanding at times. I hope you can tolerate that behavior of mine. "Anyway, those are my terms to accept you as my assistant. Do you agree to them. Please think them over carefully." Sara Halifa considered what she heard. Going to learn the tricks of the secretarial trade didn't really bother her (though knowing Fujita -san would be footing the bills did) . He was considerate of her beliefs, she noted. As for travelling to be his companion...why not? Reiji never once took advantage of her when she visited him to check his progress on getting back her painting. He never even intimated she should grant him any favors... All right , he did smoke a lot. And she noted he can be a touch demanding and a workaholic when he faced a challenged. But for all that....he never gave up on a project he was faced with completing. And he was considerate of her. And she knew he would never give up on something that interested him. Also, in her heart of hearts, she knew instinctively that being with Fujita-San was right. It felt right. She nodded. "I accept your terms, Mr. Fujita. I won't disappoint you, you'll see." Reiji nodded. "Somehow, I know you won't." He held out his hand. "Welcome to Gallery Fake, Princess. As of this moment, you're hired." Sara smiled. "Please. Just call me Sara. I'm not comfortable with titles anyway, Mr. Fujita." "Sara it is then." Reiji grinned. "You can call me Reiji. By the way, did you know Sara means 'princess'? "Actually, no, Mr. Fuji-, er I mean, Reiji." Sara smiled. "Guess I've a lot to learn." Reiji smiled. "Yes. But I know you're a quick learner,Sara." Sara smiled. She knew she was right coming to Tokyo. Not only did she get back her favorite painting. But now she had a chance to start over. A new life. She knew she wouldn't mind sharing it with Reiji Fujita. Well, there you have it. The Prologue to my fanfic. Hope you like it. God willing, I'll post Chapter 1 very soon. Hope you'll post what you think so far. Thanks! And here we go With Part 2A Enjoy! NB: The rest of this story takes place after the events of Gallery Fake episodes 23-24 (Lady Sara Parts 1 and 2) GalleryFake: The First Secretary Part 2 : Capre Diem! "Another day, another dollar as the Americans would say..:thought Reiji Fujita as he opened and let himself into Gallery Fake. Unlike most businesses, he usually arrived earlier than his secretary. Not that he minded, really. He was an early riser and it was his habit to come early to do what in US Naval parlance would be to: "Walk the decks." Which is to say, check his gallery before business hours. The gallery was in pristine form with the floor so clean he can eat off it if it ever came to that. The paintings that lined the walls ranging from a reproduction of Van Gogh's Starry Night (and he was keeping at the request of his friend Yuko Ichihara, who already gave a down payment for it) to Da Vinci's Virgin on the Rocks were in fine form, excellently cleaned and maintained. Then again, he expected no less from Sara. At the thought of his lovely secretary (though he wouldn't confess to it in her presence, at least he hoped he never had to) Reiji sighed as he sat doen on the couch and lit his first cigarette of the day. A Dunhill. A rather expensive indulgence, but then he only allowed himself one pack a year of the brand. He glanced at the white wall clock mounted over the sales desk. 7:07 AM. Sara may still be asleep . 'I hope she comes in today. I've a lot to make up for. "You really only have yourself to blame, don't you, Reiji? " he asked himself, almost rhetorically. A simple holiday in the United Kingdom at Sara's own invitation to stay at a family house. A respite from the work of running Gallery Fake, And what did he do? He took advantage of Sara's generosity and treated her cavalierly, ignoring her opinions and taking her for granted, nearly lost her. He wondered how things would've turned out had he not heeded the Brit detective Sanders who told him, cryptically that Sara was the light in his life who brings balance to it. It was a miracle that he caught up with Sara at the Tate Gallery and asked her to remain at his side. All the more that she accepted. "I wonder if she's ever forgiven me for treating her the way I did." All he could do was hope. On an impulse, he got up, straightened out his red business suit with vest and blue necktie and went to his private office. He checked his answering machine and glanced at the calendar. The date brought a smile to his face. Today would be his best chance to set things right with Sara. He checked his Minerva Caliber 13-20 Chronograph with the red wristband. Still too early to make the calls he needed to make. That's OK. He can afford to wait. And then he would sieze the day. Capre Diem. Last edited by Papermaster; 08-22-2012 at 12:48 AM. |

And here's Part 2B! Enjoy! Gallery Fake : The First Secretary Part 2B: Capre Diem II NB: Feel free to refer to Episode 12 of Gallery Fake "Today's going to be a beautiful day! I know it will because I'll be going to Gallery Fake and work with Reiji! And I'll let him know that I love him! " The thought came to Sara Halifa as she awoke in bed in her comfortable room at the Imperial Hotel. In good spirits, attired in a white lace camisole and matching shorts, she got to her feet and glanced at the beautiful Tokyo skyline her view from the hotel gave her. It helped to convince her to take residence at the Imperial. Capre Diem! Seize the day! The saying caught Sara's fancy after hearing it said by Robin Williams in his movie Dead Poet's Society that she saw on HBO last night after having dinner at the hotel's restaurant. In good humor she brushed her teeth, and took a shower. As she bathed, she remembered her meeting with Sayoko Mitamura at the restaurant last night. She was just finishing dinner when the director of the Takeda Art Museum came to her table. "Miss Mitamura! What a surprise!" she had said at seeing the elegantly beautiful director attired in a grey business suit and sensible flats. At five-eight, she rarely used heels. "Good evening , Sara. " Sayoko had smiled. "I know its rather late, but I was really meaning to see you this evening. May I join you? I won't take up much of your time." "Please," Sara motioned to the chair across from her. She was conscious that she was attired in a green blouse over a light blue shirt and rather loose jeans and sandals. "What can I do for you?" She and Ms. Mitamura weren't exactly friends. They were civil to one another, but they weren't close. Reiji Fujita seemed to be the tie they have in common. "Would you like something to eat?" "No, thank you; I've already eaten." She paused to gather her thoughts then : "It occurred to me that I never thanked you for the contribution you gave to the Takeda Museum this year. Mea Culpa! I should've tahnked you sooner." "I don't understand. I wasn't even in Tokyo when the charity dinner happened. I was stranded in Pakistan after I went to Kerabia to renew my visa and passport papers." "Yes, well," Sayoko leaned forward and said almost conspirationally, :"Actually it was Mr. Fujita who donated this year's piece. It was the Living Ophelia from Shakespeare's Hamlet. He did it in your behalf." While Miss Mitamura occasionally asked a favor from Reiji Fujita, she never dared to call him by his first name. "He really cares for you, you know." "What?" Sara's blue eyes widened at that. "Whatever do you mean by that?" Sayoko smiled. She proceeded to tell her of the 10 days when she and Fujita -san thought Sara had been aboard Mumbai Flight 406 that exploded over the Indian Ocean. At the time, they thought she was killed. "Except Reiji Fujita. He refused to believe it. He kept vigil at the Gallery waiting for you. He hardly ate. I had to bring him dinner. I didn't know he preferred crab, though. He believed you were alive and that you would go to the gallery once you arrived from Kerabia. "I wish I knew that sooner." Sara remembered that. "Truth is I was supposed to take that flight but at the last minute I remembered a request Reiji made and decided to take another plane. It made a stopover at Pakistan, but then we were hemmed in by a storm. There was no way to let Reiji know where I was. I guess it was fate that saved me." She smiled. "I met a lady friend of Reiji who told me 'There are no such things as coincidence. Everything is dictated by Fate.'" "Then your friend was right. Fate spared your life that day. Mr. Fujita never believed you were dead and knew you'd come back." She paused. "Fujita-san and I don't always see eye to eye on many things. All the same, Sara, you're lucky to have boss who cares for you even though he may not show it. Anyway, I just thought if fair that you know." Her cellphone-an Ericcson chimed then. "Excuse me." she took her phone and glanced at it. "Well, I'd best be going. They need my back at the Takeda." She stood up. "Good night. I hope you can sleep well tonight." She took her leave. Sara recalled all that as she finished her shower. "If only I knew, maybe I wouldn't have lost my temper with Reiji when we were in England. I have to let him know I appreciate his being concerned for me. For all his faults, he restored part of my dignity when he recovered the Phantom Sunflowers. I still owe him. I have to make it up to him somehow. And I will.Someway. Somehow." She emerged from the bathroom and changed into a white and green trimmed jumpsuit and leaving her room, went downstairs to the gym next to the coffee shop where she worked out daily. The gym was half full when she arrived and she proceeded to do her routine calisthenics followed by a session at the Nordic Track and fixed bicycle before finishing and repairing to her room to take a warm shower again and change into a light blue blouse over a cream long sleeved shirt , a short maroon skirt that came to a quarter inch above her knees, a balck leather belt, and black tights that hinted at her slender legs and comfortable black flats. Sara combed her chestnut brown hair and examined herself at the mirror, satisfied she looked presentable. she also made sure that the shirt covered her arms to shield the nasty 3rd degree burn mark that marred her right arm. True, Reiji never took issue with it; he knew she had her arm burned when she fled her home as it was ablaze and barely escaped with her life. Still, Sara remembered Reiji, bless his heart. also stood up for her during their last visit to the US at the invitation of Senator R.C. Kelly. At the reception at the Washington Plaza Hotel, she ran afoul of an arrogant American Army Corporal who, at seeing the burn (Sara had forgotten to wear something that would cover the mark), commented snidely that she should've remembered she was going to a celebrity filled event and remember not to embarrass her boss. What was that hussy's name? Oh, yes, Alison R. Hart Burnett. Reiji intervened and put that smart mouthed floozy in her place alright! That was a very satisfying thought as she clipped on her silver braceleted Guess wristwatch which she alternated wearing with a Japanese custom precision handcrafted watch she bought off the street for 3 million Yen that took Fujita-san by surprise at first knowing of it. Collecting her handbag that held her purse, cellphone, her credit card-an American Express Gold - loose change, fare for the train to the Tokyo Bay Area,a copy of that month's Reader's Digest and a copy of Nenene Sumerigawa's novel , Midnight, Sara then proceeded to the coffee shop for breakfast: scrambled eggs, toast with Kotusen butter, cereal, fruit and orange juice and coffee. Conrad , her regular waiter wished her well as he got her order. Then it was off to work. An honest day's work for an honest day's pay, she thought, recalling the saying. "Have a nice day, Miss Sara." said the doorman. "Thank you, Raizo." Sara said. She was well regarded at the Imperial as she never used her title to get her way and acted as anyone else. Yes, its gonna be a great day. I'm gonna be with Reiji! Part III will be up soon. Enjoy! Last edited by Papermaster; 08-25-2012 at 01:09 AM. Thanks, Dany! Appreciate the advice. I'll implement them when Part 3 is posted. Glad you like the story and I hope you caught the anime/pop culture references. The First Secretary is slated for 5 chapters (counting the Prologue as Chapter 1). It may go a bit longer. I hope to use characters from other anime in mini crossovers. NB: There are anime that cannot mesh into Gallery Fake. I tried a draft of Reiji having talk with Margery Daw from Shakugan No Shana, but it just doesn't feel right. Since Yuko Ichihara of XXXHolic has her shop in Tokyo, its more feasible. Also, Gallery Fake will be placed within the Marvel Comic universe as Marvel/Madhouse did several anime cartoons (for me, the Iron Man anime was the best so far.). That won't mean that Spider Man will pay the Gallery a visit, but there will be references. I worked in a mention of Tony Stark and it wasn't easy, but doable. The First Secretary is inspired by the fact in Episode 2 of Gallery Fake that the gallery was already open in Tokyo when Reiji first met Sara. Then I remembered the Star Trek episode The Menagerie and I thought What If... This story also draws its inspiration from The Lady Sara 2 parter episode when I read the viewers comments that the story's resolution seemed so short. Part 3 will be up by next week or so. Hope you read and like it. |

And here we go with Part III! Enjoy! Gallery Fake: The First Secretary Part IIIA : Transit Thoughts "Come in, Sara. Its open," called Reiji's voice from behind the door. Sara opened the door and stood at the threshold of her boss' apartment. She can't help but be surprised. Fujita-San's apartment wasn't what she expected for a man in his position as a gallery owner. It was a small one level affair with a round table and two chairs that served as a sitting room . The bed set against the wall was narrow, barely fitting 2 people and the TV and sound system were tucked in a corner. Shelves of books lined the walls. It would be a rather tight fit for a person. A small wardrobe stood next to a bookshelf lined with works of fiction . She saw works of the British writer Ian Fleming, works of Steinback, a copy of Gone With the Wind and a copy of Sun Tzu's The Art of War among others. "Good afternoon, Sara." Reiji Fujita was seated at the table. He wore a white polo shirt and casual slacks. He smiled at her. "I 'm glad you found your way here. Hope you didn't get into any trouble getting here." "Oh, I had no problems. I asked around. People were kind enough to help me." Sara smiled. Reiji found he really liked the sound of her voice. It was so soothing. "Please, don't take offense, but I didn't expect you to live in an apartment." "None taken," Reiji said easily. "When Gallery Fake started, this was the one place I could afford to pay rent for. The superintendent's a kind man. He took a chance at me. Didn't see any reason to move out once the gallery got going. And, its rent-controlled." He motioned to the empty chair. "Please, have a seat." Sara smiled. She liked Fujita-San more and more. She liked a person who took pleasure in working. She smoothed her dark blue skirt that came to just above her knees and which she wore in conjunction with a dark green blouse and yellow green scarf. "I understand you wanted to see me?" she asked. "Yes," Reiji smiled. "Sensei Takagawa phoned a few minutes ago. She says you're a fine student . You have a real talent for sketching and painting. She says you should develop it more. And I understand that you'll be finishing your secretarial course next Wednesday. Congratulations." Sara blushed. "T-thank you." She absently brushed back her hair. "I'm glad to know you're pleased with my work at school. I should be able to really working as your secretary starting at the beginning of the month." "You'll start working at Gallery Fake next month," Reiji corrected her. Not this incoming month but the next." "Why?" Sara was surprised. "Do I have to take another course?" Reiji shook his head. "No. But next month marks the start of Ramadan , that's a special month for your religion, correct? You should observe it. Don't worry," he grinned. "I won't look for another secretary while you're on leave." Sara was startled. She didn't know what to say. She hesitated. "Thank you, again. Truthfully? I was planning to ask you when the course was finished. I was afraid you'd refuse. You've already done so much for me." "Don't worry, Sara. I understand. I know how important it is to you. As you'll have to fast from dawn to dusk for the duration, it wouldn't do if you faint at work at the gallery. You go have ahead and take some time off" "Thank you." impulsively, she hugged him. "Whoa! Sara!" Reiji was caught by surprise. "I'm sorry. Its just that I really appreciate this. You know, Reiji, you're the first real friend I made here in Tokyo." "Well, I hope we can be good friends, Princess." He hadn't noticed it before then it hit her. "Sara? You're not wearing your head veil." She smiled. " I set it aside. Honestly, I'm more comfortable without it. Besides, " here, a look of sadness came over her. "given all the trouble coming from where I came from...I-I didn't want to give people an excuse to distrust me." Reiji understood. Despite Sara being a princess, the events of Nine-Eleven and Seven-Seven had really left its mark throughout the world, even in Japan. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bring up something so sensitive. Has anyone at the University's been giving you trouble? I can-" "No. I've made a few good friends there. I'm alright, really. Thanks for caring, though..." The sound of the train making its stop roused Sara from her reverie. She looked up. Still one more stop to her destination. She sighed, "Darn! I wish Reiji was here with me." she and her boss sometimes manage to meet at the same train commuting to Gallery Fake. She really liked it when that happened. They would share a newspaper, trade some jokes... Sara really felt safe in Reiji's company. She had a bench to herself on the train today. There were other commuters onboard. Some were businessmen, most were students. Not a few, she noted, stole a glance at her. That pleased her in private. 'Its nice to know some find me attractive,' she thought. She wished Reiji would look at her that way once in awhile. She chanced at a businessman reading a copy of the Asahi Shimbun, still the most read paper in Tokyo, a side story read: "Preparations Started for Ramadan" it read. Sara knew enough Japanese to read and understand it though at times Reiji tutored her to get the linguistic nuances right. "No wonder I was remembering that first time I came to Reiji's apartment. Sara thought. She would have to put in for leave in 10 days. Reiji always permitted her to go. Still, she hoped she wasn't inconveniencing him. She already owed him a lot. She sighed as her train halted. She got up and left. Sara soon found herself walking down the wharf. She smiled as she felt the warm sea breeze. It was comforting. As she walked, she noted she felt excited. She always did when she came to work at the gallery. She hoped she'd never lose that feeling when she went to work. If that ever happened, she knew it meant she was taking her job -and worse, Reiji!- for granted. She didn't want that to happen-ever! Ok, so she and Reiji had a small falling out. But that was in the past now. And for all his faults (and especially after what Miss Mitamura told her last night) , Sara now knew Reiji did care for her. She had to show him she had already forgiven him. "Meow!" Sara started as she heard the familiar sound. She squatted down in front of a grey cat with black stripes that walked over to her. "Good morning! Miss me?" She asked as she held out her hands and the cat bounded towards them. She cradled the cat and it purred. Sara had met the cat when Reiji had been falsely accused of selling a counterfeit painting. He had proved his innocence with help from Sayoko Mitamura, but during the 2 weeks he spent in jail, Sara had been dejected as she opted to stay at his apartment (with his permission) , It was while she was checking on the gallery that she encountered the cat.She felt instinctively he was there for her so she took him in. Though, as a stray, he preferred to stay at the wharf, he still always came to greet her when she came in. "Come on, fella. Let's see the boss." Sara grinned as she went to Gallery Fake, Time to start working. Part IIIB will be up very soon! |
