In different parts, yup.
But I wouldn't consider 500years+/- to be around the same time..
I don't know it was just a passing thought lol

apparently heaven is defined by catholocism as "eternal rest in the presence of God" which don sound all too bad, seeing as God is supposedly everything good that could possibly exist

While I would never rule out the possibility of an afterlife (almost every culture on the face of the Earth has developed some sort of concept of life-after-death and I find it hard to believe that 90% if not more of the Earth's population both currently and historically could be entirely wrong), the Christian Heaven is a bit hard to swallow for me, mainly as it is presented in contrast to Hell. There are too many human explanations for such an ideology that become apparent when you look at how that particular religion has developed over the millennia- basic negative reinforcement practices come into play. Hell is presented as a punishment for wrongdoing or defection (in the case of some Christian sects, such a thing as trying to interpret God's word for yourself is a sin) whereas Heaven is regarded as the exact opposite, the reward for your good behavior and loyalty to the Lord. This results in a mindset of unquestioning obedience and servitude not only to God but to whomever might claim to hold the answers to his providence (i.e. the Church, priests, bishops, any sort of purely fallible human being who nonetheless is presumed to be the Vessel of God's Word). In my opinion, Christianity has become, even if it was not always, a simple control mechanism, with Heaven or Hell as your impending reward or doom (respectively) depending on how you act in life and whose path you follow. The overwhelming human nature of such a scheme makes the Christian Heaven a tough nut to bite for me. This dual concept also tends to detract from the underlying human notion to know oneself: if you're constantly worried about what God/your priest/your congregation thinks (and whether or not you will get into Heaven or suffer eternal damnation as a result of that), you aren't likely to explore your own motives and goals, resulting in more of a hollow shell of a person than someone with an individual personality and ambitions of their own. That's just sad.

Without the Hell comparison, however, Heaven is just another ideal of peace and rest after death, not far separated from many Pagan-rooted concepts of the afterlife that I find a lot more reasonable if only because it would be much more difficult to apply them in such a manner as to further a purely human agenda.

This makes a lot of sense...
