In Islam and Judaism. Satan/Shaitan, doesn't live in hell. He lives in Heaven. Ever heard of the term "Left Hand of God"? That's him. He's kinda like a Jester or something. Doing all kinds of tricks to make people commit sins.

In Islam, he's never referred to as the Left Hand of God. He wasn't an angel either. Angels have no free will, according to the religion, so they can't disobey God.

He's a Jinn, which is an entirely different species that was on earth before Humans. He was the best of them and encouraged everyone to stop fighting and worship God. As a reward for him, God brought him up to heaven. Then God created Adam and the ruh (spirit) was breathed into him. When all of the angels and Iblis (Satan's real name) were commanded to bow down to him, Satan said no dice. He thought he was better than us and refused to listen to God. He was banished for his arrogance and disobedience. He hate humans and now wants to lead us astray and bring us to Hell.
