Being a woman myself, I am not sure if this is ignorance or nativity talking. I am thinking the former more than the later.

It's called give and take. By taking the items from said person you agreed to an exchange of some kind. It's an implied relationship, just like when someone buys you a drink at a club, they expect your presence to get to know you. In this case, they wanted time. So, the more things you took, the more said person required of your time. Don't take anything, or ask for it, and you won't have anything to complain about.
