Talk with people in the chat thread, other threads. Get to know a decent amount of people. After that you can just send out invites to whoever you want and 50% of the time they'll accept. Trust me, I know.

Yeah usually people would request you as a friend over time and you add people that you have encountered. They add you back too if they know you from experience.
