the distinctions are interesting because if shaping is internally done then there are still two more steps to both attacks.
1. adding (or not adding nature manip. in the case of rasen)
2. externalizing and projecting the chakra

i thought raikiri cuts while chidori is a slight projectile where the lightning fires off a bit.

but youre saying either is just a punch full of lightning, i get it now.
there is no 'surging blast', right?

so is there any real difference between the two?

Not really, as Gai says Raikiri is just an alias that Chidori received because Kakashi supposedly cut through a bolt of lightning with it.

Anyway, back to shape manip, you could probably say that every one of Sasuke's new chidori-based moves is simply applying some minor shape manip to chidori.

As for Neji's attacks... well I don't really know how they work, but I think it's like the repulsing force of too much chakra(remember tree walking practice) released into the air.

well saying its slight is well, unfair? i mean the essence of shape manip. is manifesting chakra in your hand then molding it, right? no hand seals; and rasen & chidori are the only examples of this, no?

compared to rasengan it may be much less technical but IMO chidori is top-notch, A-rank shape manip...what am i missing?

Yes, molding chakra is the essence of shape manipulation but when you look at rasengan which is a complete shape manipulation of chakra, it's a complete circle. It has a definite shape like a square, triangle etc, and I think we can all agree that shape manipulation is probably used to form circles or coat weapons because I can't really think of a reason why chakra would need to take the form of a triangle lol, but you get my point. The chidori has a slight shape manipulation because when you look at it, it's circular but its not really a circle. Its shape is only manipulated to the point of keeping the majority in the palm of ones hand or to coat it around ones hand.
