the explanation is like a couple pages back or something but essentially its a genjutsu activated towards the user him/herself and allows for anything you can think of to happen. makes pain and death turn into mere dreams and it can in reverse turn your attacks and other things into reality. all of this at the cost of forfeiting your eyes to be closed forever directly there after..

Hashirama THOUGHT HE WAS DEAD. It's kinda easy to get away when people think you're not alive anymore.
Though I do think Hashirama was stupid for not taking his body to be buried, or checking back for it.

Madara didn't go blind AFTER he took his brother's eyes because he didn't use Izanagi. He went blind BEFORE that because THE MANGEKYO GOES BLIND IN TIME.

Now, ignoring the most credible theory(that you actually fuse eyes, not just exchange them), you say Izuna couldn't have taken Madara's eyes because Izanagi had closed them?
How could he have implanted eyes into his eye sockets if they were closed, huh?
Not without surgically removing his eyelids.

Why would you assume that Madara has used a jutsu he's only commented on?

I guess he might used Isanagi but in different situation. He might used it to escape First Hokage during their famous battle, First Hokage is very high level ninja and to make even him believe that Madara is dead will take something really unique and powerful. It is possible because we newer saw his left eye after his battle with Hashirama he always wears mask and even when he removes it to show his Sharingan to Sasuke left side of his face stays shadowed.

thats one possibility. he gave up his left eye to escape the 1st. though idk if a full mask would be necessary to hide that fact. maybe he is just severely scared up there or something. there is some crazy lines on his face. though im not sure if those are to imply age or not. /shrug

Well, if he was able to use it with only one eye and that eye went blind, that would be proof that EMS does not in fact negate Izanagi's side effect.

But seriously, they're ninjas, playing dead and stuff is what they're supposed to be masters at, and seeing how Madara lost most of his powers after that battle he must've survived by a hair's width.
