Yea Gaara has it way worse. At least Sasuke can go back and see that Itachi really did love him and so did his family. Gaara had none of that and was consistently used and betrayed.

I find the whole sad past to be redundant if the character isn't going to take something positive from it. Both Gaara and Sasuke never took anything from it except be strong for the sake of revenge or destruction. Instead Gaara had to had Naruto beat some sense into him about the type of person he should be and Sasuke became a revenge obsess psychopath who needs to be put down. That being said Itachi has the saddest past because he was force to kill his own family to prevent a civil war in Konoha and he still manage to make something positive if not completely twisted out of himself.

I agree with you. I honestly think that Itachi has the most tragic past. Sasuke's self-pity really makes me want to slap him rather than sympathize with him. As for Gaara, I feel for him. But let's be honest, his past seriously can't compare to Itachi's.
