Re: Shinsengumi Episode 31+32

This series just gets better and better!! I know... I know... I said I wasn't going to comment until the end, but... I can't help it.

It is clear, the last few chapters, why Hijikata was called "the demon of the Shinsengumi". The rules and regulations set by him were unreasonable and unjustifiably strict. I find it amazing that he and Kondo were able to maintain a friendship with their difference in morals.

I find every character intriguing; Kondo is charismatic in both speech and manner; very diplomatic man, it is understandable why he had such a devoted following. Hijikata is likable and, although I get the impression that he truly wanted to help Kondo, his methods leave me cold. Inoue's fatherly presence kept the group grounded and connected to their beginnings in Edo.

Okita was boyishly charming; although a master swordsman at such a young age, he was clearly lacking in political knowledge. Yamanami I liked immensly, eventhough I was unclear about his motives in the beginning. An articulate, deep thinking individual, his premonitons regarding the Shinsengumi would sadly prove to be true.

The deep brooding, but fiercely loyal 'lone wolf' Saito is another favorite along with the righteous Nagakura. Harada's comedic character is priceless; his antics were a reprieve from the more serious issues of the series and Todo's growth within the Shinsengumi was a pleasure to watch.

All in all, I am enjoying this more than ever. I keep trying to pace myself while watching episodes, but there is always a tantilizing cliffhanger that makes that very hard to do. I must say, "Delayed Gratification" really sucks.

I recommend this series to anyone interested in Japanese history.
