Default Graphics Tablet; Touch or Pen?

Should I spring for one that's touch based or pen based?
Or both?

I have a tight budget, the touch one is cheaper, but i'm guessing that'll affect detailed graphics work in PS. Or can I simply use any old homemade stylus on the touch only tablet with satisfactory results in comparison to the pen and touch??

get one with both or pen. You don't really want one with just touch if you want to use it in PS

Okay so is an A6 pen active area good enough? That's about 1/4 the dimensions of a sheet of A4 paper

Agreed. A pen is almost essential imo. And it makes it loads easier to paint and whatnot. I use Bambo Fun Pen And Touch and it's great although a little expensive I suppose.

you might find it a little small as the area is mapped to your screen. You will find A5 and larger easier to work with on PS

I'd recommend a wacom

also I second that the bamboo fun pen and touch is great

Both, if you're just starting, a Bamboo Pen and Touch is the way to go. Don't just dive into the bigger surfaces. A Bamboo can last 5+ years without changing the nibs.

Ditto this. I have a bamboo tablet - pen and touch. I love the pen to death; usually shut the touch off. Great price, great piece of tablet.

Edit: ^ yeah. listen to the folks above me.
