those mountains were covered in earth like features and not large pillars of pure ice and snow sticking out of areas like in this pic:

Ah but you are only judging from a few pictures. Wait and see if there will be Earth like features on the planet. An if not, I'd feel that it is totally acceptable because I highly doubt Earth type plant life can sustain on an extremely cold planet such as that. If you look at Antarctica there isn't any plant life; it's an arctic desert.

Also, the part of the planet you know of can consist in a different region on which swtor tasks place.

The large pillars of pure ice and snow being introduced, brings forth a mysticism of the planet. Without them, it'll be another Hoth. The pure ice pillars against the starlit night sky truly makes the planet a breathtaking vista. An its lore of crystal caves and power of the force adds to the entire concept. I for one love the change, it shows a deep improvement in illuminating Ilum.

i don't care for it due to that it's jedi controlled crystal caves were known to be mostly deep into the cave systems and not at or near the surface

it is earth like in features; not in having life(it was a known barren world in that regard)

true; however most planets in star wars have only two main types of features(ex. hoth: mountains & Arctic valleys; naboo: plains, forests)

Earth isn't barren. What Earth features do you mean specifically? Exclude the arctic desert.
